Pupils fall for author’s latest book
SCHOOL children from across Swindon were entertained by comedian and author Charlie Higson today.
The former star of The Fast Show was promoting his new book, The Fallen, and hundreds of pupils packed Dorcan Academy’s hall to hear him speak.
The Fallen is the fifth book in a series which has been critically acclaimed.
“Adults probably know me for my comedy, but to the younger generations I am known for my writing,” said Charlie, who has appeared on QI and recently in Miss Marple.
“It takes me about a year to write each book and then I have two tours every year.”
As well as promoting his book, Charlie also used the talk as an opportunity to tell pupils about the joys of reading.
He said: “Reading should be something which children enjoy and do for pleasure. I want to encourage them to go and pick up a book themselves for fun. There are obvious other benefits, but first and foremost it should be for fun.”
Dorcan Academy headteacher Scott Sissons said he was proud to have the famous author in the school, and his popularity showed the strength of children’s literacy.
He said: “It’s absolutely fantastic to have an author as successful as Charlie come to the school.
“We have had quite a few events similar to this in the past and they are always very popular with the children.
“There is often talk that television or computers are taking over but books for young people are just as popular.”
