A Highland finish nears
7:40pm Monday 16th September 2013 in News
THE end is nearly in sight for an 80-year-old grandfather who is pedalling the length of Britain to raise funds for the Make a Wish charity.
Denis Hedges pushed off from Lands End on Saturday, September 7, and has been cycling an average of 85 miles a day ever since.
He said Sunday, pedalling between Dumbarton and Fort William, was the hardest day he has ever spent on a bike. Chilly weather and 60mph winds added to the pressure of the picturesque Highlands.
Denis is raising money and awareness for Make a Wish which provided his grandson, 13-year-old Tom Hyde, with a trip to Florida while he was recovering from the rare type of cancer Hodgkin lymphoma.
Yesterday, Denis cycled 75 miles between Fort William and Dingwall, travelling past Ben Nevis. He said: “We did think of going up but we aren’t mad. The end is getting closer and closer now.”
Denis is hoping to finish his bike ride tomorrow afternoon in John o’Groats. So far he has raised around £1,250. Sponsor him at www.justgiving.com/ denishedges
