Pub landlord promises to buy Adver readers a pint if Swindon beat Chelsea
ADVER readers will have another reason to celebrate if Swindon Town manage to beat Chelsea next Tuesday.
A brave pub landlord has pledged he will buy every single reader a drink if the Reds are able to beat the billionaire Blues of the Premier League.
Howard Taylor, who owns the Steam Railway pub in Old Town, is so confident of a victory by his team Chelsea that he has decided to put his money where his mouth is.
“I have a soft spot for Swindon but they aren’t going to win,” said the confident former GWR fm and Heart Radio breakfast presenter.
“The Special One is back and with all the money behind them I can’t see anything other than a Chelsea win.
“I think my money is quite safe. At least I hope it is.”
Having grown up in West London, Howard is a life-long fan of the Stamford Bridge side, so has made this offer despite the fact it could end up costing him thousands of pounds.
He has lived in Swindon for 23 years and follows the Robins but on this occasion is hoping they lose.
He said: “I’ve never been in a betting shop in my life so I haven’t looked at the odds.
“It’ll be a good David verses Goliath story but I’m afraid it’s not going to happen.”
Swindon have been drawn to play Chelsea in the third round of the League Cup and the fixture has captured the imagination of the town.
Howard said that whatever the result, it is a great occasion for the fans of the Robins.
“It’s going to be such a good game and the atmosphere will be fantastic,” he said.
“These games don’t happen that often but when they do they get the whole town excited about the possibilities. I’m now hoping the only possibility is a Chelsea win.”
Howard has been given plenty of offers to go and watch the game at the County Ground, but instead, will be watching from the safety of his own pub.
“People have said I can go along with them to watch the game but I won’t be there,” said Howard.
“I know people are keen to get their hands on tickets so I would just be sitting in the seat of a Swindon fan.
“I’ll be watching the game at the Steam Railway with the regulars who will be cheering on Swindon.
“If Swindon do manage to win I’ll be having more than one drink myself.”
Information on how to claim a free drink if Town win will appear in the paper in the coming days.
