Macmillan’s coffee event in 23rd year
12:30pm Friday 20th September 2013 in News
SWINDON is getting set to celebrate the World’s Biggest Coffee morning next week, with many pubs, community centres and schools taking part.
Next Friday, September 27 is the main day for the events – the 23rd year that the fundraiser has run – and this year more than 115,000 people signed up to hold a coffee morning, raising a record £15m for the charity which supports specialist cancer-care nurses.
This year there will be 622 coffee mornings held in Swindon alone, and not just on Friday.
Gillian Thornton, the chairman of the Swindon Macmillan Cancer Support committee, was very positive about this year’s response.
She said: “Different committees are doing different things, some of the coffee mornings also have stalls and games as well as coffee and cakes.
“It’s been amazing how the whole community gets together to raise so much money. I have been seeing so many signs about different coffee mornings being held throughout the town.
“It’s a very popular event and nationally it raises a huge amount of money for Macmillan, which means that the money goes towards supporting a great many people.
“Last year at Lydiard Milicent alone we raised over £400 at a coffee morning.”
Macmillan are hosting four coffee mornings throughout the town on September 27 – in Lydiard Park, where there will also be a bric-a-brac sale, at Even Swindon School, at Grange Junior School and in the Highworth Parish Council offices in the High Street.
As well as the mornings hosted by the local branch of Macmillan, events will be held all weekend in town, including at Brookhouse Farm, in Middleaze, on the 27th from 9am to 11am, at the Grange Leisure Centre in Stratton on 28th from 8.30am to 10am, and G&L Evans Family Funeral Directors in Covingham Square from 10am on the 29th.
Sarah Elliott, Macmillan’s fundraising manager for Swindon and Wiltshire, said: “We want to make sure no one has to face cancer alone but we can’t do it without the amazing people who fundraise for us, so we are extremely grateful to everyone who holds a coffee morning for us, large and small.
“So far we have over 1,400 coffee mornings being held in Wiltshire and from these we are hoping to raise over £100,000.
“The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is a really fun event that is really easy to take part in.
“If you can’t do it on September 27 then just pick another day, if you’re not keen on coffee and would rather have cocktails or even herbal tea then that’s fine as well.”
