Police donate garden gifts to Swindon dementia centre

A CENTRE caring for people with early onset dementia has received a boost as Gablecross police station have organised a new barbecue and flower beds to be installed for them.
The Forget Me Not Centre, on Colston Close, has been open since 2005, and holds events and activities for service users.
Lynda Hughes, occupational therapist at Forget Me Not, said: “One of the people who works at the station has a family member who comes here, so we have very close ties with the station.
“We have had quite a long relationship with the police for fundraising and we are always looking for help and support to improve services.
“We work with people with early onset dementia, and we support them to live as independent a life as possible.
“We do hiking walks, gardening, DIY, cooking and sailing.
“Service users come for the day, but we also work with them and their families at home to make sure that the things they learn here are replicated at home. One of the problems with dementia is people think it is a life sentence, but with the right support they can live a really enjoyable life.
“We are very grateful for the build. Most jobs we try to save for the service users, but this was quite complicated.
“They are going to do some more jobs for us, including some raised flower beds to make the gardening more accessible.”
Wiltshire Police’s Clive Read, financial investigator at the fraud office at Gablecross police station, said: “I have a vested interest in the place because a family member is a service user. We work closely with them, because they are a small club and do not get a lot of support. It is great they are being helped like this.”
Mike Harris, the project manager at Vinci Facilities, who undertook the work, said: “We look at promoting our engagement with local communities up and down the country by identifying charitable needs where we can. Clive approached me and we were happy to arrange a garden clear up and build the barbecue.
“They do great work and we really admire what they do here.”
