MORE than 40 cyclists attempted the gruelling task of travelling the length of the Great Wall of China at the weekend.

Using several gym bikes, 12 teams set about trying to cycle 5,500 miles in just over nine hours at the David Lloyd Gym.

They took on the challenge in an attempt to raise money for the charity Inner Flame as part of its annual big challenge.

David Wreathall, co-founder of the charity, said a the start of the day: “We’ve not done anything this tough before so I’m not sure if it can be done .

“We are certainly going to be doing our best but everyone will be flat out all day.”

The teams were made up of several members with two people cycling at anyone time.

A number of local charities and businesses took part and in total there were 46 riders.

Among those taking part were a group from David Lloyd Gym, who provided all the equipment, and some of those involved in organising the Royal International Air Tattoo.

David said: “I have been really pleased with the number of people who have come forward to try and take on this challenge.I have also had to step in at the last minute as well after someone pulled out on Friday even though I have done no training.”

As well as everyone attempting to reach the overall target of 5,500 miles, each team was trying to out do each other and cover the furthest distance.

Participant Brian Caswell, of Clarity Water Specialists, said: “There is definitely a competitive streak in the teams and they all want to come out on top. “We worked it out beforehand and it comes out that every bike will have to travel constantly at 17 mph to reach the full distance.

“The most important thing is that we raise as much money as possible for Inner Flame.”

The charity helps people aged 14-25 to build confidence and to reach their full potential in life Normally, Inner Flame only does one big challenge each year but this year will be holding two.

Next month the charity is attempting its Mount Everest Challenge, in which teams will try to climb up and down a wall enough times to cover the height of the world’s highest mountain.
