Hospital asks Swindon residents to continue Emergency Department appeal support
BOSSES at Great Western Hospital are urging the town’s residents to continue to dig deep for the new children’s Emergency Department in order to reach their target by Christmas.
A whopping £11,500 has already been raised towards the new department after the Adver launched a campaign last month to raise £20,000 through our ‘Making it Better’ appeal.
The money will help put children at ease in the new children’s emergency department by providing the likes of iPads, toys and a refreshment stand, which the department cannot afford with its NHS budget alone.
Since the Adver launched the ‘Making it Better’ Appeal last month, along with funds from a charity abseil in May and a sponsored London to Paris cycle ride, the GWH has been thrilled to receive more than half of the target already, but hopes to raise the rest of the cash by the festive period.
Fundraising manager Hannah Persaud said: “It’s absolutely fantastic and a lot of members of the public have been sending in donations on an ad hoc basis. Then obviously we had the bike ride which raised a lot of money so that’s fantastic.”
Although the hospital has received numerous donations of soft toys and children’s games to be used in the new ED, they cannot be used in the hospital due to infection control regulations.
Hannah said: “We are so grateful for all of the donations, but we cannot accept any toys, clothes or anything like that unfortunately. It is lovely, and very kind of people, but we just can’t use them.”
Building work began on the department last month and will include the dedicated children’s unit, as well as a complete redesign of the Emergency Department.
Hannah said: “I just want to say a huge thank you to everybody who has supported the appeal.”
Later this year, the hospital will hold a charity abseil to help raise more money for the new department in collaboration with Action For Children. Together they hope to raise £22,000 through the abseil and the money will be split between the two organisations.
Hannah said: “We are hoping to get 120 people to take part in the abseil, which would be the biggest number of people taking part so far.”
