THE seeds were sown for the future yesterday on a new garden at Lawn Primary School.

Pupils, parents and grandparents all set about preparing the garden so it can become a key asset for the school’s learning.

They were joined by volunteers from the Lawn Community Group for an afternoon of green-fingered activities.

“The enthusiasm of everyone has been brilliant,” said Graham Strevens, the school’s outdoor learning co-ordinator.

“The kids especially got stuck in and were telling their friends how they got to help with the gardening with their family.

“There has been huge progress made today which will be of benefit throughout the year.”

Part of the garden will be dedicated to growing vegetables while the rest will be sensory garden, growing a variety of plants which the children can learn about the five senses.

When completed, the garden will be used to teach children about a variety of subjects.

“For me children do not get outdoors enough or learn about the origins of what arrives on their plate,” said headteacher Kelly James.

“Using the garden we can teach children about the growth of food and where it comes from. It will also be used in plenty of other subjects as well as part of our enterprise project.

“When the produce is grown the children can sell it in the playground and to the community group to help them learn about business and the value of money.”
