Summer festival set to continue after success
1:50pm Wednesday 9th October 2013 in News
A SUMMER season of community activities in Old Town has been hailed a success by organisers.
The Little Big Festival, organised through Commonweal School, has seen families enjoy everything from acoustic music sessions to chess between April and September.
It was seen as a way to give the whole community the chance to use the town’s open space.
The inspiration came from a similar project in New York and Commonweal headteacher Keith Defter wanted to run something similar in Swindon.
He said: “The key to this project was keeping it small, and affordable, both in terms of costs and investment in time from those running it.”
Carol Watts, who runs the Town Gardens Café and was an organising partner, said: “It was very much weather-orientated, but even so people have come out to take part or watch.
“There has been a tremendous atmosphere, people really love the Town Gardens, it’s a central meeting place to relax and unwind.”
Plans are under way for next year’s event and organisers are staging an Open Meeting at Commonweal School on October 22, starting at 7pm.
