BUDDING property tycoons now finally have the chance to own the Magic Roundabout, Swindon Town Football Club and even the Adver itself.

Yesterday saw the launch of the Swindon version of Monopoly, and the lucky venues, landmarks and organisations to have a place on the famous board were revealed.

The Steam Museum, which can also be purchased by gamers, hosted the official launch in front of members of the public, eager to see exactly how the board looks.

It was announced in March that the game was being created and Swindon residents were asked to vote on which local places should be featured.

The Magic Roundabout has the honour of taking the spot of Mayfair, the most expensive spot on the board. Arkells Brewery, Lydiard Park and Swindon Therapy Centre for MS have also been voted in.

Dan Taylor, Head of Custom Games at Winning Moves, who made the board under licence from Hasbro, said: “It’s great to finally have the game on the shelves. I was in the town centre earlier this year to announce the game and ask people what they wanted to see.

“The response from the people of Swindon has been absolutely fantastic. We have been overwhelmed by the number of people who have contacted us with some great suggestions and we’ve worked very hard to decide what was going to make the final cut.

“The Magic Roundabout is something which is synonymous with Swindon and we thought about putting it as one of the transport spots but felt it deserved a more prestigious place.”

As well as voting for properties, people were also asked to come up with suggestions for what could appear on the Chance and Community Chest cards.

Among the ideas to make the cut are the chance to be a mascot at Swindon Town or win a lead role in the town’s pantomime.

“We had so many ideas suggested to us that were excellent and it just shows the creativity of the Swindon people,” said Dan, who was born in Swindon himself.

“This has just shown how proud people are of their town and I am delighted we now have a game which every Swindon family can enjoy.”

To celebrate the launch, the Pegasus Brass Band, who have been voted onto the board, played a variety of house, hotel and money theme tunes.

Eager members of the public were also invited to get their first glimpse of the game yesterday and first impressions were positive.

“I already have one ordered for my birthday so I’ll be playing it with my friends,” said Craig Wyatt, 31, of Old Town.

“I was really excited when I heard about it. I’m a third generation Swindonian so it’s great to see the town immortalised.”

Angela Livall, of Highworth, said it was a great moment for the town.

She said: “It’s brilliant to see all the places we know so well on the board.

“I’ve not played Monopoly before but I’ll definitely be learning to play now.”

The game is now on sale, priced at £24.99 and can be bought from Smyths, Toys R Us, WH Smith, The Works and Waterstones, as well as online.
