Popular pub worker suffered heart attack
A POPULAR member of staff who had worked at a Wood Street pub for more than 30 years has died suddenly.
Steve Dench, who lived in Belle Vue Road, suffered a heart attack on Sunday morning, much to the shock of colleagues and customers at The Kings.
An ambulance was called and resuscitation was attempted but paramedics were unable to revive the 61-year-old, who was a well known face around Old Town.
Vicky Turner, who owns The Kings, said: “If you didn’t know him by name you knew him by face.
“He was a very private man and so reliable. If he said he was going to be here you knew that he would be.
“He was just a real gentleman. He would say hello to you in the street but he wouldn’t butt into your conversation or anything. It’s easier to say what he wasn’t than what he was like.”
“It’s been a real shock to us, especially since he seemed absolutely fine that morning. It’s been very upsetting.
“We’re all like a family here really, especially Bill, Lyn and Steve who have been working here for such a long time. It was always the three of them together.”
Steve joined the Kings 31 years ago as a chef, and has since worked in various capacities there, including book-keep and handling cash.
Vicky said: “I think it’s only when someone has gone that you know how much they did, and how much you took for granted. It’s just the little things that he used to do all the time.
“He worked in every department and worked really hard. I don’t think he ever really took a day off.”
Bill Bull, who has worked at The Kings for 43 years, said: “He didn’t really complain and he was a very dear friend to us.
“He helped everyone when he could. He worked everywhere and did everything, he did the cooking, waiting, everything. He’ll be very much missed, not just by us but by the customers as well.”
All are welcome to Steve’s funeral, which will take place on October 23 at the Kingsdown Crematorium from 12pnoon, followed by a wake at The Kings.
Vicky said: “It’s the last thing that we can do for him to celebrate him and send him on.
“Everyone is welcome to come along. He was a really big figure in the pub and in Old Town.”
Visitors are requested not to bring flowers but are invited to donate to the British Heart Foundation and the Samaritans.
Collections will be taken at The Kings and at the funeral.
