Frame goes up for new leisure centre complex
WORK on the former Swindon College site at Regent Circus is well underway with the frame of the new build clearly visible.
A top of the range leisure complex is being constructed which will house a cinema, supermarket and range of restaurants.
Construction of the £50million project is being carried out by ISG, who started erecting the building last month.
The first stage of the work will see the 52,000sq ft Morrisons supermarket being built, which will then be followed by the 30,000sq ft six-screen Cineworld cinema complex and restaurants.
A 450-space car park will be built as part of the development.
James Digby, a director at site developers Ashfield Land, said: “We are on course to be able to hand over the units in May next year ready to open in the Autumn.
“I am very pleased with the progress.”
In September it was announced that Coal Bar and Grill would be joining Ask, Nando’s and Prezzo’s as some of the restaurants in the complex.
There are still some unfilled units but it is expected these will be filled shortly.
“We are hoping to be able to make an announcement regarding the empty spaces soon,” said James.
“Talks are ongoing and we have had a lot of interest in the units. I expect them all to be occupied when it opens.”
Ashfield Land first purchased the land in 2007 but due to problems in the market there were long delays in getting work off the ground.
However, when it is finally completed it is hoped the complex will help to breathe life into the town centre, especially the northern end.
