A MAN was attacked by a dog in the town centre as he walked home from work.

The incident took place in Regent Street at approximately 6.50pm October 15.

The 25-year-old victim was walking along when he was attacked by a dog described as a dark brown Staffordshire bull terrier type wearing a metal chain around its neck.

The victim said that the dog was not on a lead and charged at him bearing its teeth and barking.

Due to its aggressive nature, the man attempted to shield himself with his rucksack before trying to run away.

He then fell to the ground and was savagely bitten by the dog on his hands and arms.

Fortunately, another man came to his rescue and managed to pull the dog away from him but by this time he was already suffering from deep bite wounds to his hand and arm.

Swindon Town Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team Sergeant Becky Smart said: "There were several members of the public in the vicinity at this time and one female is reported to have been an off duty nurse who assisted until an ambulance arrived on scene.

"What is most concerning is that there were a number of small children who were also present at this time who were luckily left unscathed by this incident.

"I am appealing for two women who were with the dog at the time of the incident to come forward immediately. The women were pushing a push chair and put the dog on the lead and walked away following the incident.

"These women offered no apology for the attack and showed no concern for the injured male. The two females are described as white and aged between 18-25."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sergeant Becky Smart on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be left anonymously.
