Brownies meet Becks and Ellie
5:30pm Monday 28th October 2013 in News
FIVE lucky youngsters from 2nd Freshbrook Brownies have had a day out they will never forget after meeting sporting superstar David Beckham and quadruple gold Paralympian Ellie Simmonds.
The duo, who are ambassadors to the Active Kids scheme, hosted a special Sainsbury’s Active Kids event at Lee Valley Athletics Centre in London. Marking a year on from the Olympics 2012, they joined forces to run a training session for over 170 young people.
The 2nd Freshbrook Brownies won the chance to meet David and Ellie after completing all 24 activities in the challenge, which were focused around games, skill, food and a David Beckham one-minute challenge. The Brownies entered a competition to answer what is their favourite way of being active. Paula Rutherford, of Toothill, said her daughter Kerry was one of the lucky Brownies.
She said: “Sainsbury’s arranged our travel arrangements by train, tube and coach to the stadium and the children met up with all the other winners and were put into teams to play the games.
“David and Ellie welcomed the children personally and joined in the games. It was a fantastic day and one that I am sure the girls will remember forever.
“They also came away with souvenir backpacks filled with goodies.”
The 2nd Freshbrook Brownies were one of 34 groups or schools across the country who took part.
This year alone, the Active Kids scheme has delivered over £13m worth of equipment and experiences to schools, clubs and organisations.
