HUNDREDS turned out to the Wyvern Theatre on Saturday for a family fun day as part of the UK-wide Family Arts Festival.

More than 750 families enjoyed events organised by the Wyvern and several local organisations including Swindon Dance, Swindon Library, inSwindon and Holmes Music.

Children had a chance to meet some of their favourite characters, including The Gruffalo, Mr Potato from Peppa Pig and Tweedy the Clown, as well as local characters Alfie the Adver Alligator and Swindon Town’s Rockin’ Robin.

Five-year-old Eva Fraser was there with her family from Royal Wootton Bassett, and most enjoyed Tweedy the Clown who was making balloon models for the children.

She said: “It was super fun. My favourite bit was Tweedy.”

Other attractions included colouring, cup-cake decorating, face painting, story-time and free dance workshops at Swindon Dance.

Wyvern marketing manager Richard Loftus said: “It has been amazing, we had so much going on and everyone seemed to enjoy it.”

Creative types could even learn a few tips from Tony De Saulles, who illustrated the popular Horrible History book series.

Holmes Music and inSwindon organised performances by Charlie Anne, Ella Smith, Emily Jane, Rhys Samuel Bury and Joshua.

Theatre director Derek Aldridge said: “Children are the next generation of theatregoers.

“Our family fun day has enabled many to experience their first taste of theatre and we hope to welcome many families back for this year’s giant pantomime adventure.”

Visitors met the stars of this year’s pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, including Jack, played by Samuel Parker, Jill played by Hollie Evans and Daisy the Cow.

Hollie, who led a story-time session in the library, said: “It’s been really good.

“It’s nice to see everyone getting so excited and wanting to get involved.

“The thing I love most about pantomime is that for many children - myself included – it’s their first introduction to the world of theatre. I remember it being a magical world that I so wanted to be a part of.”

The was part of a national Family Arts Festival held during this half term.
