PENSIONER Morris Tucker, who suffers with arthritis, has been struggling without heating in his home for more than a week.

Morris lives in one of Sanctuary Housing’s bungalows in Eastmere, Liden.

He says the main storage heater, which warms up the lounge, his main living area, stopped working about eight days ago.

Despite complaining to his warden every day, he says the organisation has failed to send anyone around to fix the problem even after they made a number of promises that an engineer would call him.

This has left the pensioner, who lives on his own, to suffer in the cold as temperatures have fallen to just 3°C this week.

“I’m 82 and my joints have been hurting because they are affected by the cold,” said Morris.

“Every time I have gone to them they say the engineer will call tomorrow, so I wait and I never hear anything else.

“I don’t know what we pay our money for as they never get round to doing what they are supposed to do.

“I wouldn’t normally go to the paper but I was getting desperate.

“I don’t want to keep going back to the warden because my joints have been hurting.”

To keep warm, Morris has had to wrap up in extra clothing.

“I don’t like making a fuss but I don’t think it’s right that they keep saying they are going to come and I wait in for them and then nothing happens,” he said.

The Met Office reported there has been a number of dips in the temperatures over the last week, with the thermometer dropping to 7°C on Saturday and staying around 3°C in the middle of the week before climbing back up to 6°C on Thursday.

Daren Jones, the national gas operatives manager for Sanctuary, said: “The new heater is to be installed today.

“Mr Tucker first reported that one of the storage heaters in his home wasn’t working late last week and our engineer found that it was beyond repair.

“A replacement was ordered and in the meantime Mr Tucker was given a temporary heat fan.

“We understand that with the colder weather that this will have been a disruption, and want to thank Mr Tucker for his patience.”
