THE £50 million development of Regent Circus has been given the seal of approval from its neighbours who have all enjoyed watching the workmen construct the dramatic framework so quickly.

The site of the former Swindon College is now awash with activity as construction workers use cranes and diggers to prepare the site in time for next year’s grand opening. The main body of the framework for the development, which will include a six-screen Cineworld cinema and 52,000sq ft Morrison’s store, has been built.

A number of big names in the restaurant world have already been unveiled as opening up shop at the complex, including Coal Grill and Bar, Nando’s, Prezzo’s and Ask.

Loraine Lamb, who lives opposite the site, said it was like having a live Grand Designs programme outside of her home. “I’m a bit sad but I’m really into programmes like Grand Designs so I have loved watching it all going up,” said the 55-year-old of Eastcott Hill.

“I really like seeing how it all comes together. My bedroom window is opposite it all so it’s ideal for seeing what’s happening.”

She said when the frame first shot up a few months ago it was exciting watching the workmen walk on the upper level thin bars while attached to safety ropes.

“It will be great to have Morrisons right on my doorstep,” added Loraine, who designs fascinators and bouquets. “I don’t drive and I can’t carry things very far – even a four pint of milk can be too much sometimes so I do all my shopping online but it will be great to have one just across the road. I’ve been joking with my friends saying I won’t even need to take my slippers off.”

Mark West, 57, of Edmund Street, also says he is keen to see the shops arriving. “The construction work hasn’t been bothering me,” said Mark, who has lived there for five years.

“I usually go to Asda but if it’s a big Morrisons I’ll go there instead. I think it’ll give a real boost to the area.”

Sophie Hart, 35, of Edmund Street, moved into her home in February. “It will be quite nice to have so many restaurants so close by,” said Sophie, who works for Thames Water.

“The builders have been really considerate. I have hardly noticed them. “I have got a four year old daughter and she has loved watching it. It was really funny once they started the work, all the children have been plastered to the windows – we haven’t needed the TV on.

“They have put all the foundations up really quickly. We will lose a bit of daylight here but I don’t mind about that.”

Mary O’Neill, 77, of Eastcott Hill said she was really pleased there would be a cinema on her doorstep.

“It will be great to not have to travel to the cinema,” said Mary. “I’m looking forward to it all opening.”

Ashfield Land acquired the freehold of the site in 2006 which saw Swindon College’s relocation to a new £17m campus. It is hoped the development will be finished by the summer next year.
