JUST over five years ago David Scott had returned home after a gruelling ordeal in a Filipino jail.

Now he is helping the Scouts to raise money to help those who are suffering in the country after Typhoon Haiyan last month.

The 41-year-old machine operator, of Park South, was jailed in 2008 with his now Filipino wife for committing adultery.

After several days in a rat-infested cell they were given bail and fled to Thailand, where they stayed for several months before returning home.

However, he still holds the Philippines in high regard and believes everything should be done to help those in need.

He said: “At the end of the day we are all human beings so have to help each other out.

“If something like that were to ever hit this country then I hope that others would come to our aid.

“People talk about charity beginning at home but if we can do something then we must.

“It may not be on the television now but it is still a very serious situation out there, with bodies still lying by the side of the road.”

With David’s wife and daughter being from the far east country, he has close connections to the Swindon Filipino Association.

Today the 3rd Swindon (Wichelstowe) Scout Group will be holding a raffle to help raise money that the association can still take over.

It is still accepting prizes and anyone is welcome to purchase tickets.

“Even if it doesn’t seem like much it can still make all the difference,” said David.

“If someone is thirsty and you are able to provide a bottle of water it can save their life.

“Every little that can be put forward helps and then we will make sure it goes to the association so the money is given out where it’s needed.”

Despite his and his family’s experience, David still recommends people visit the Philippines when they get the chance.

He said: “Every country has people who will try to defraud you if they get the chance, even over here. I just happened to come across the wrong people.

“It is a beautiful country and the people have very strong family values. I think it’s something we have lost over here.”
