Vandals trashed a tennis club’s changing rooms in Purton, leaving the community shellshocked.

Wiltshire Police were called to the Working Men’s Club in Station Road on Saturday after a group of at least 100 drunk youths tried to gatecrash a party.

Officers were at the scene within minutes of receiving the call at 9.13pm and the youths were ejected from the party, which had spiralled out of control.

A number of them were collected in taxis called by police and others were collected by friends and families, but some smaller groups remained in the area.

It is thought that some of these youths then forced their way into the Purton football club house and the changing rooms of the tennis club.

Doors were kicked in, tiles were smashed and mirrors were shattered as well as amenities being damaged in the building.

Bricks were also found in the showers and debris was left strewn across the clubhouse steps.

It is also thought they started a small fire at the site, and at around 12.30am Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service were called out.

Crime scene investigators then attended the scene and recovered forensic material that would not have been left behind by regular users of the facilities.

Wiltshire Police have urged the people responsible to come forward and own up to the damage.

Martin Alvis, beat manager at Royal Wootton Bassett, said: “We were extremely disappointed considering the location and we would press on the consciences of the people involved to come forward.

“Purton is a small, close-knit and friendly community and it’s extremely disappointing when people work hard to provide a service to see it attacked like this.”

Police are appealing to anyone with information about the incident to come forward and contact Wiltshire Police on 101 quoting reference 54130114922 as soon as possible.
