CAMPAIGNERS who have been fighting to stop a derelict dentist surgery being transformed into a House in Multiple Occupancy (HMO) have received a major blow.

Swindon Council’s planning team have recommended the property in Tryon Close, in Liden, for approval despite refusing a similar application a few months ago.

Platinum Property Partners Swindon, the company behind the application, hopes to construct six bedsits at the property.

The first application, which was for one less room and the same number of car parking spaces, was rejected by Swindon Council under delegated powers.

Council officers ruled the single-storey rear extension was a poorly designed addition that would be too large and out of character with the rest of the property.

It was also decided that the plans would have had an adverse impact on the character of the area.

Chairman of a residents’ steering group set up to oppose the application, Alan Gaunt, 61, said everybody was disappointed by the news.

“We just can’t work out why they would pass this one if they refused the other one,” said Alan.

“I feel quite betrayed by the planning team.

“It’s such a similar application. We will be putting our faith in our elected members to make the right decision for people living in the area.”

Residents in Tryon Close are concerned the development will see an increase in traffic and more noise coming from the property.

Councillor Derique Montaut, who represents the Eldene, Liden and Park South wards, said he will be at the planning committee on Tuesday night to support the residents.

“I think everyone is feeling very let down and disappointed,” said Coun Montaut.

“But they are prepared to fight.

“I think the only difference in this application is that it has been reduced by about a metre, which is an insignificant change when you consider the list of worries the residents have.”

The planning committee will take place at the council’s Civic Offices at 6pm.
