Wide-bay car park seen as fresh start for town

Swindon Advertiser: Coun Garry Perkins and council leader David Renard officially open Kimmerfields car park in Swindon town centre Coun Garry Perkins and council leader David Renard officially open Kimmerfields car park in Swindon town centre

A STATE-OF-THE-ART car park in the town centre was officially opened yesterday morning in what is hoped to be the first stage of a town centre regeneration.

The Whalebridge car park has 850 spaces, designed wider than many of the others in Swindon, and there are indicators on each level letting drivers know how many bays remain.

Coun Garry Perkins (Con, Shaw), the cabinet member for economy, regeneration and culture, said: “This is a positive day for Swindon.

“It is a good-looking building that helps to bring up the whole area. People now coming into the town centre from that direction will get a great first impression of Swindon.

“People working nearby or shopping can now park in a convenient location.”

There are plans to demolish several surrounding car parks, including the Wyvern Theatre’s, over the coming months before the next stage of development will begin.

“The underpass near Debenham’s will go as the area is pedestriansed and new office space is put up along with shops and restaurants,” said Coun Perkins.

“In the new year we will start talking with residents about the new traffic plan so we make sure we get the changes right.”

I do love the headlines, a "state of the art" car park, its just new that's all. State of the art is like the Japanese ones where they stack it for you and you collect it like a vending machine. How long before the Albanians get their cleaning operation in there?

I am quite surprised, we are actually starting to create car parks with spaces that are not designed for Morris Minor sized vehicles.

A great first impression of Swindon , some people are easily pleased.
As for the Town centre , it's a mess .
Regenerate that before you do the car parks.
This bloke seems to love wasting money on silly projects. The new road layout in that area for one.

I'm guessing that anything over a pound an hour will be considered 'too much'.

Given that when a couple of weeks ago I had the misfortune to have to park in a town centre car park for 4 hours and about 5 minutes, which cost me £8.20, a pound an hour sounds quite good!

But you have to actually get to the car park first and with the stupid revised road network that is a challenge in itself!

went into town centre for late night shop, what a non event, there needs to be serious rethink of what we expect or town centres, not too many years ago the last Thursday night shopping before Christmas was usually worth the effort, shops seeing the dismal footfall closed at seven or earlier, is this no more than a token gesture, I wonder how many stores will say their sale are up, but come the new year will report lower figures but smother them with grease to stop investors realising the slippery slope they are on.

That's a big part of the problem with the typical Swindon mentality. In this day and age, 'perfectly adequate' doesn't really cut the mustard.

Not that what was there before was actually adequate. This town needs greater aspiration, not just sticking with stuff from the 1970s because, 'it'll do'.
