SCORING goals alongside Swindon Town players was a Christmas Wish come true for a primary school football team.

STFC goalkeeper Wes Foderingham and striker Miles Storey played football with the Goddard Park Community Primary School football team this week, thanks to a nomination from a pupil’s mother.

Martina Lewis, of Park North, wrote to us after the team were left in tears when they came second in the final of the Swindon Town Football in the Community nPower annual tournament at Croft Sports Centre.

Goddard Park coach Natalie Haigh said: “We won our league and got to the final against Brookfield Primary School. We lost 2-0 but we played really well.

“Initially after we lost the pupils were absolutely devastated. The team that won got to play at Wembley. The pupils have got to learn to lose to learn to win though.

“We didn’t tell them Wes Foderingham and Miles Storey were coming this week, we just told them they were going to play an extra hour of football.

“For these guys to come is just amazing. It is so important for the pupils to have role models.”

Nine boys aged from 10 to 11 took part in the session.

Midfielder Rhys, 10, whose mother Martina sent in the nomination, said: “It’s been brilliant, I never thought I would get to play alongside Swindon Town players. I picked up some tips.”

Fellow midfielder Kieron, also 10, said: “I have never met any famous football players before, it has been fantastic.

“They are really friendly and have helped with our skills. I want to play for Swindon Town when I get older.”

Nathan, 10, who was the team’s goalkeeper at the final at Croft Sports Centre, said: “I am amazed and shocked that the players came to our school. I have been to watch two games of theirs.

“I was happy and upset after the tournament. I was happy that we got to the final but sad at the same time because we lost.”

STFC’s Wes Foderingham said he was impressed with the team’s skills.

“It brings back memories of when I used to play for my primary school team,” he said. “It is good to see the boys enjoying themselves”

“They are really good for their age. I can see a few professionals coming from here.”

STFC’s Miles Storey said: “Some of these lads are really good players. When I was at primary school I never had a school team. It is great that they are starting from an early age.”

Martina said: “The team made it to the final but came second. All players came off the pitch crying and then sat against the fence with their heads in their hands sobbing. I had to keep my tears back “I had the idea to ask for a Christmas Wish for the team. The boys were stunned when they saw the players.”
