Swindon commuters hit by rail fare hike

COMMUTERS have been hit with a New Year rail fare hike as the price of journeys around the country has risen by an average of 2.8 per cent.

In some areas the rise has been slightly higher, and the average increase on First Great Western lines which came into effect yesterday is 3.1 per cent.

The rail company has said it is delighted to have been able to keep the rise in fares at the target set by the government in the Autumn Statement, in which Chancellor George Osborne stated any increase would be kept below inflation rates.

But local pressure group, Fair Fares 4 Swindon, have said the town is being unfairly treated, with season ticket prices for the hour-long journey to London now soaring above £8,000.

Chris Watts, 46, a spokesman for the group, said: “There have been so many increases recently, and over the last few years it has risen well above the average wage rises.

“A season ticket to London is now close to £8,500, whereas four or five years ago it was £7,500, so it has increased considerably. It is unfair that Swindon takes the same hit as elsewhere, because the fares were so high to begin with. It affects us more than others because we are paying an artificially inflated price.

“We are a captive market. Because there is a monopoly situation in the private sector, the consumer has no choice but to pay for it.”

Mr Watts added that the fact the rise has come in below inflation is not a cause for celebration.

“They cannot bring the prices up for five years then expect everyone to give them a round of applause when you then come in slightly under inflation. Nobody is going to be fooled by that.

“It has been suggested in the past that we pay more in Swindon because we get a better service, with a higher volume of trains. But by the time most trains get into Swindon they are full and there is only standing room available.

Michael Roberts, director general of the Rail Delivery Group, said: “We strongly support the Government’s decision to limit the average increase in season ticket prices this year.

“This year and in coming years, passengers across the country will continue to benefit from billions of pounds spent on improving services.”

The cost of getting to London by train is the cost of getting to London by train. Of course any company will charge what they believe the market can/will bear.

And, of course, everyone wants to pay as little as possible and never have the things they buy rise in price.

If people are happy to live in cheaper areas such as Swindon and potentially earn higher salaries in London then there will always be a premium to pay for that.

There's always the option of running a car if the £8,000 a year for a train ticket is considered too expensive.

Does 'Fair Fares 4 Swindon' give a s*** when petrol prices rise? No.

Yes, the photo that accompanies this piece is very interesting. From left to right:

Mark Dempsey - Labour Councillor and Labour's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for North Swindon

Anne Snelgrove - Labour's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for South Swindon

Kiran Dickinson - Chairman of the Labour party's youth committee in Swindon who is apparently about 17 years old so I'm not sure how many Swindon to London railway season tickets he's had to purchase

Chris Watts - a self-proclaimed 'Labour campaigner' who unsuccessfully stood as Labour councillor candidate for Eastcott Ward

How many of the above actually work in London, would they care to confirm?

So, kind hearted individuals who spend their time campaigning for lower fares for other people (why?), or rabble rousing left-wingers who like to get their names and faces in the Adver because they believe it will assist their election chances?

You decide.

The season ticket at £8500 does not sound too bad compared to the £100+ for a one off peak time return, if you do a little math’s.
232 return journeys (assuming Monday – Friday and 28 days holiday) = less than £37 a day.
Swindon to Paddington = 80 miles (160round trip), therefore 23 pence per mile.
Compare that to the cost of a car (even before the congestion charge or parking costs) and you will see it is a winner.

N.B. why “Parliamentary Candidate” would worry about it is beyond me as IF they are elected they will just put it down to expenses.

Well they should. FGW pay the same or similar diesel prices to the rest of us and are similarly affected by hikes in fuel prices. They also have to pay the same exorbitant duties and taxes on that fuel.

While we are at it, as the cost of living is uppermost, what effect does he think the 12 price hikes we had during the last gov had on the cost of living and what effect the fuel escalator they left in may, would have had if not cancelled, as petrol would now be at least 20p a ltr more.

Train prices are far too high from Swindon compared with Didcot and Reading. I recently moved to Reading because the £470 month train fare for work was too much and was much cheaper to rent out my house in Swindon and rent a flat in Reading. Best move I ever made, Reading knocks spots off Swindon, however why lie about seating. 99.9% of the time I got a seat on trains between 6:30 and 8 am.

Unsurprisingly, I Too / Empty Car Park / Blackwell 2 is quoted on there as saying he would vote for the Labour party candidate - despite spending all his time denying he's a Labour voter or supporter. Still, that's mental health issues for you, makes people very unpredictable and prone to denial.

I'd not seen that previously but it certainly looks like Ringer is the same person as Oliver. Add that to Tim Newroman and it shows how the thumbs can go up and down so quickly on here. How many log ins does one person need?

For the exclusion of any doubt as I have said in previous pages. I am not Ringer or Tim Newroman. I have two logins "Oliver Donachie" and "Oliver_Donachie"

Anything I have to say I am happy for people to know I am saying it, I have no need to hide behind anything or anyone, especially pseudonyms.

If you wish to make an accusation I would ask you to have the courtesy to do so directly via my published contact details so that I may correct any misconceptions you have.

It is owned and run by a person who was, rather hilariously, banned from the Labour party after showing his inability to conduct himself remotely appropriately.

Banned from the Labour party? You really do have to be a half-wit of the highest order to have that happen to you. Make no mistake, he was *desperate* to get at the trough, too bad he ran his mouth off like a small child having a tantrum.

I don't recall saying you were a member of the Labour party, what I have said is that you continually defend and support Labour because you have a pathological hatred of the Tory controlled local council and because you think it scores you brown-nose points with the Labour councillors and Labour party members at your local Labour party forum. I do accept that when there are only 10 or 12 contributors a person like you would try every method available to ingraciate yourself and be liked by others, but it doesn't really work for you. Your performance here - and the lack of response your posts at your Labour forum - indicate that your 'mates' are actually a little embarrassed about you.

Maybe it's the dancing.

As I have told you, very clearly, many times now, I only ever use ONE login at one time on this forum. Much like you, I have used other login accounts in the past but various software changes at the Adver have meant those old accounts have been lost and a new one had to be created. Just like YOU and others have done, there is nothing wrong or underhand about that.

What is wrong is the FACT that you use around 4 logins, at least, on here. Sometimes you even use different logins on the same article threads. Do you actually deny that Empty Car Park / I Too (and variations of) / Blackwell 2 and Still About are your logins?!

Somebody has managed to register a login that appears to be 'Ringer'. I don't know how they've done it. If you weren't quite so retarded, you'd realise that somebody has done it in order to post things that are intended to receive negative attention and make me look daft. Also, if your limited brain power can process the concept, why would anyone post something and then specifically deny they'd posted it? What on earth would be the point?

I have reported it to the Adver but they've done nothing. As it's obviously a problem that is going to continue, I'll probably create a new login and stop using the genuine Ringer login. As I told you above, that will mean I'm still only using ONE login at any ONE time.

On rare occasions you post under your real name under the misconception that it gives you credibility People on here are not as simple as you insist The best one is where you pretend someone has "cloned" your login You really are quite nuts[/p][/quote]I don't recall saying you were a member of the Labour party, what I have said is that you continually defend and support Labour because you have a pathological hatred of the Tory controlled local council and because you think it scores you brown-nose points with the Labour councillors and Labour party members at your local Labour party forum. Unlike you. Ringer
