Town release statement on Adver ban

Town chairman Lee Power banned the Adver from press conferences and home games on Monday

Chief Sports Writer Sam Morshead was at the centre of the row over a tweet about Town's team selection

The terms of the ban mean the Adver will not be allowed to sit in the press box at the County Ground or take photos of matches

The offending tweet was over the inclusion of striker Nile Ranger in the Town squad to face Peterborough

SWINDON Town Football Club have released a statement on their decision to bar the Adver from home games, confirming they have agreed to meet the editor Gary Lawrence for talks.

Robins chairman Lee Power banned the Adver from attending press conferences and reporting on matches at the County Ground after objecting to a Tweet by reporter Sam Morshead.

A statement on the club's website released tonight said: "The Club's actions to place an embargo on the Swindon Advertiser was as a result of a series of issues with the newspaper of which the Nile Ranger incident was the most recent.

"The restriction on the Swindon Advertiser covering fixtures is in effect for home matches only, the first of which is at the end of this month.

"The Club feels it has acted in the best interests of Swindon Town and its supporters.

"However, the Club acknowledges that supporters do need a conduit and, as such, confirm that they will be meeting with Gary Lawrence, the Group Editor of the Swindon Advertiser on Monday to resolve our differences and to rebuild trust between both parties.

"The Club would like to reiterate that this decision has been made with supporters in mind and would like to thank all supporters for their continued backing."

Well said by the club.
The (or should I say our club) have held out an olive branch to the Adver and now Gary Lawrence needs to sit down with the club and thrash out the ground rules for reporting club matters including the use of all media channels.
I am sure that Sam Morshead will be one of the topics of discussion.
Perhaps it is time for him to go. Maybe the Adver should run a poll and let Adver readers and town supporters have a vote on this issue?

Frankly this is no less ridiculous than the original ban. It is pathetic that STFC are attempting to hide Lee Power's off-the-scale touchiness behind some claim of their actions being '...in the best interests of the fans', and a hastily-invented '...series of incidents'. This isn't any kind of olive branch from STFC.

The truth, it seems to me, is that the new incumbent in the Chairman's seat at the County Ground is just the latest in a long line of tin-pot dictators, in the Hillier/Hunt tradition. When Mr Lawrence eventually meets Power or his representatives he must not allow the club to dictate who covers their matches or what they report. This is Swindon Town, not North Korea.

Interesting, I'd also suggest, that the poll on whether Power was right or not showed an almost even split...funny how little it reflected the comments on these pages. I wonder why?

Tin pot dictator? Get your wallet out, buy the club then you would have the right to criticise the man's decisions. Its not like he is the chairman of the club or anything...oh wait...

How do you think Alex Ferguson would have reacted to a media hack publically publishing his team prior to the team sheets being released. History would suggest in exactly the same manner.

@Tyran66 So Power's above criticism because he bought the club? I disagree. He can run it as he wishes, just as Vincent Tan at Cardiff and that charmer at Hull City can, but ownership and wealth do not preclude criticism. I've got every right to criticise Power, and so do you, and anyone else. We're not living in a cap-doffing serfdom.

How would Alex Ferguson have responded? Tetchy as he was, I'm fairly confident he would have seen this as the very minor issue it is. SAF lost his rag over his son being accused of dodgy dealings...a very different issue on a very different scale. Tetchy he was, certainly, but not remotely this petty. He'd also achieved a thing or two before he banned the BBC. Power's barely got his feet under the desk.
