WORK to revamp the Bruce Street Bridges has begun with Thames Water improving the sewer system to prevent future flooding.

The work has seen the closure of the roundabout turning from Great Western Way into Cheney Manor Road and motorists are warned to expect delays.

A spokesman for the water firm said: "Ongoing works to improve the sewer system in the Cheney Manor area of Swindon will see the closure of Iris Redman Gardens from today until Friday, February 7.

"The latest phase of the Thames Water project will involve two new sewers being laid under the road to help reduce the risk of waste water flooding in the area.

"Alternative parking arrangements have been made for residents affected by the closure which will involve closing one lane of Rodbourne Road. A parking permit scheme will be in place for the duration of the closure and will be enforced.

"Work to connect the new sewers to the existing network will begin in February and means that one lane of Cheney Manor Road will be closed between the junction of Rodbourne Road and Baileys Corner. The planned dates for the closure are Monday February 17 to Friday March 7.

"The work to the sewer system is vital to increase capacity in the network and reduce the risk of flooding for around 15 properties.

"The £6.9 million scheme will also involve work in Ferndale Road later this year."

Ultimately the set of four roundabouts will be redesigned by Swindon Council to become one large roundabout.
