SUPPLIERS and promoters have been left thousands of pounds out of pocket after the sudden closure of the Brunel Rooms this week.

After the club failed to pay its rent arrears, the building managers moved in and took back control of the venue, changing the locks and revoking the current lease.

Staff are also owed hundreds of pounds, after they were only paid half wages this month and cheques given out for the rest bounced last week.

Management say they are currently negotiating a new, more cost effective lease, and hope to re-open in early February.

But invoices to local suppliers are still outstanding.

One regular DJ confirmed they were still owed a small amount of money by the club, but declined to be named.

Primesight, a national outdoor media company which specialises in billboards, is currently owed £2,784.32 by the club after they failed to keep to an agreed payment plan.

A spokesman for Primesight said: “We can confirm we are still owed money by the Brunel Rooms. We will be following this up with the club in light of the recent developments.”

Superwide Graphics, based in Hobley Drive, Swindon, are still owed £252 for a banner made up for the DJ EZ and Artful Dodger event held on November 15 last year.

Minuteman Press, based in Newport Street, Swindon, are owed £83 for printing 1,000 flyers for Charlie Sloth resident nights, and £73 for 2,000 flyers made up as part of their January sale.

Alcohol suppliers Arkell’s Brewery and Matthew Clark declined to comment on any outstanding debts.

The Brunel Rooms are currently advertising their next event, Desires, on February 15, as they say they have agreed a new lease on the building subject to paperwork being signed.

But three days ahead of that, on February 12, the licence of the club is scheduled for review by Swindon Council after Wiltshire Police expressed concerns around safety within the premises.

Licensing officers have said the recent closure of the club will have no effect on the licensing review, and that it is still due to come before the licensing committee next month.

David Bennett, licensing manager for Wiltshire Police, said: “Our position has not changed.

“We have put the application for review of the premises in and the sub committee will meet on February 12.

“What has happened since the application went in makes no difference.

“They still have a premises licence and that is what we are asking to be reviewed.”
