AN appeal has been made for witnesses to an early morning robbery in Victoria Road.

CCTV has captured footage of a man police would like to speak to in connection with the incident, after he was seen walking behind the victim moments before a suspect made away with his mobile phone.

Shortly after 3.15am on Sunday January 19, the lone male was walking along Victoria Road while deep in conversation on his mobile phone.

As he passed the Wiltshire Gun and Rod shop, at the junction with King John Street, the victim was being followed at a distance by another man as he was heading south towards Bath Road.

CCTV footage shows the victim, wearing a white shirt and jeans, walking along Victoria Road at around 3.14am, just moments before the incident, with the other man walking on his own just metres behind.

A car is also seen in the footage passing the two men as they were walking along the street, and police hope anyone who may have been in the area at the time could shed some light on the identity of the suspect.

The victim was approached from behind by a man who demanded he hand over his mobile phone, before grabbing it from him and making off in the direction of the town centre. The stolen phone has been reported as being a black Apple iPhone 4.

The suspect is described as a white male with tanned skin and dark hair, wearing a red checked shirt, blue scruffy jeans and dark skater type shoes.

Footage captured ahead of the incident has been released by police and shows the victim before the robbery and the man police wish to speak to.

Anyone with information on this robbery or the identity of the suspect should contact Wiltshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be left anonymously.
