SUPPORT for a worldwide campaign to end violence against women and girls was shown in Swindon yesterday as dancers gathered at the Wyvern Theatre.

Co-ordinated by Hometruths, a Swindon-based social enterprise supporting survivors of domestic violence, a group of 25 met outside the theatre to support One Billion Rising for Justice.

The movement, taking place in 207 countries, is a call to survivors to break the silence and release their stories through art, dance, marches, ritual, song, spoken word and testimonies.

Given yesterday’s horrendous weather, Wyvern staff offered the dancers sanctuary in their function room, where the dancing could take place.

Kim Swinden, co-director of Hometruths, said: “We were expecting more people, but a lot of them got in touch and left messages to say they couldn’t make it because of the weather.

“We played music through the theatre’s sound system and danced along, so it sounded fantastic.

“It was a real success despite the weather. We couldn’t have asked for anything better, especially after the Wyvern’s generosity. Quite a few people who turned up have received services from us. It’s a very big issue and it brings a lot of people together.”
