Air your thoughts on town's library service

Swindon Advertiser: Coun Keith Williams, outside West Swindon library Coun Keith Williams, outside West Swindon library

THERE is still time to comment on a strategy designed to enhance Swindon’s library service and make it more sustainable.

The council wants to hear views of the public and anyone interested in llibraries.

The draft library strategy can be viewed on the Library Strategy Consultation webpage at www.swindon.gov.uk.

Coun Keith Williams, cabinet member for Highways, Strategic Transport and Leisure, who is responsible for libraries, said: “We are facing unprecedented financial challenges and have to find savings of £48m over the next three years. To do that we need to look closely at how we deliver services and make changes to reflect our financial position.

“I would urge anyone who values and has an interest in the library service to let us know how they would like to see the service operate in the future so we can shape the service to meet their needs.”

The consultation will run until 5pm on April 14 and people can email their views to: krwilliams@swindon.gov.uk.

I invite readers to look at the UNESCO Public Library Manifesto that may be read here >

It is a very useful guide for anyone contemplating taking part in Swindon's library consultation - describing a public library's "key missions", the duties of all those who deliver it (like Councillor Williams) and a lot more.

By the way, the UK signed up to this Manifesto, although one would never guess it nowadays.

Sadly libraries are the low-hanging fruit that will be cut by a thousand cuts, unless people stand up for them. There's a meeting of Old Town Library Friends at noon on 5th March in The Arts Centre. Some council officers will be there to discuss the consultation. Please come if you can.

So is this like all the other council consultations where they've already made a decision and the consultation is just for show.

I've seen more democracy in North Korea
