Top officer steps up to the Hotseat for a grilling by readers
NEXT WEEK, the Swindon Advertiser will launch the new Hotseat feature giving you, our readers, the chance to grill some of the biggest names in the town.
Every Wednesday, we’ll run a Question & Answer session with a public figure who has been in the spotlight recently, and we want your help in quizzing them.
First up in the Hotseat next week will be Gavin Williams, Swindon Superintendent for Wiltshire Police.
Supt Williams, who joined the force in 1998, assumed responsibility for policing in Swindon after a restructuring of the upper echelons of Wiltshire Police in 2011. Supt Williams oversees the north of Wiltshire and is based at Gablecross, where he began as a response officer.
Most recently, he has been in the Adver commenting on Swindon’s night time economy and the police’s responsibility to ensure licenced premises are run responsibly, as well as drug dealing in the town following the largest police operation of its kind in Wiltshire Police’s history.
Supt Williams has also commented on legal highs and the associated risks, and in May last year he hit back at a senior judge who claimed the cocaine trade was ‘rife and widespread’ in Swindon.
In 2011, when Supt Williams took on his current role, he vowed to put more bobbies on the street at peak times and ensure swift justice for violent criminals. Speaking at the time, he said one of his biggest challenges was the perception of crime against the reality. He added: “Swindon is a safe place and it’s a good place to come to have a day or night out.”
So, if you have a question for Supt Williams on policing in Swindon, get in touch.
Send your questions to email@example.com under the heading ‘Hotseat’.

We’ll put your questions to Supt Williams next week and the feature will appear in the Adver on Wednesday, March 12. All questions must be sent in by March 7.
