FERNDALE Primary School was the overall winner in the UK Big Pedal competition.

The school topped national league tables in the large primary school category of the competition, run by transport charity Sustrans, with 28,983 points, more than 2,000 points ahead of their nearest competitor.

The school made just under 5,000 journeys to and from school on bikes and scooters and had just over three quarters of the school travelling this way every day during the competition, which took place from March 3 to 14.

Sustrans Bike It officer Sharon Brentnall, pictured, said: “I am incredibly proud of the effort that the whole school and their families have put in to the competition.

“The key here is to keep it up. The signs, however, are promising – when I visited the school on Tuesday, the bike sheds were full and in assembly children said they were committed to travelling to school by bike and scooter rather than the car.”
