POLICE are appealing for two witnesses to come forward to a collision which has left a 40-year-old man from Swindon in intensive care.

On March 18, near Winterbourne Bassett, a Ford KA Cabriolet overturned several times after striking a grass verge whilst travelling south on the A4361 near Bowman’s Wood.

The driver of the Ford KA, a 40-year-old man from Swindon, suffered serious chest injuries and was airlifted to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol where he currently remains in a serious condition in intensive care.

Officers are particularly keen to speak with both a motorcyclist and pedal cyclist who were travelling between Broad Hinton and Salthrop, towards Wroughton at the time of the collision.

It is believed that both riders witnessed the KA and a black Honda Civic, including their manner of driving, travelling together immediately prior to the collision.

PC David Williams, of the serious collision investigation team, said the two cyclists could have vital information about the nature of the collision.

“We understand that just prior to the collision, travelling in the opposite direction, were two cyclists, a motorcyclist and a pedal cyclist, who would have seen the Ford KA and the Honda moments before the crash,” he said.

“The driver was injured very badly, and is very seriously ill. It is my understanding that he is still in a critical but stable condition.”

PC Williams said police had so far been unable to get any detailed descriptions of the two cyclists, but considered the manner in which the two cars were being driven, in tandem, they would have been alerted to their behaviour.

“Another potential witness prior to the collision has identified these two cyclists travelling in the opposite direction, but they were only seen very briefly and we have been unable to get detailed descriptions of the bikes or the drivers,” he said. “We believe it was a rather large motorcycle, but we have no physical descriptions of either party.

“Because of the interaction they would have had with the two cars involved in this collision, they would certainly have been aware of them.”

The riders, or anyone who has any information about the collision are asked to contact PC David Williams of the Serious Collision Investigation Team (SCIT) at Wiltshire Police on 101 as soon as possible.

Alternatively people can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be left anonymously if they wish.
