SOUTH Swindon MP Robert Buckland and Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson came together yesterday to pedal for the homeless.

The pair took a ride around Swindon County Ground Athletic Track on one of several tandem bicycles now available for hire from the Salvation Army’s social enterprise, Recycles.

Recycles is operated by residents at Booth House Lifehouse and enables them to develop skills such as cycle repair and maintenance as well as customer service.

Customers can buy restored bikes, or make use of a professional repair service.

Mr Buckland said: “I don’t think I have ever been on a tandem before, but I think Angus said he had.

“We survived despite the weather.

“But there was a serious point to it all which was to raise awareness of what Recycles do.”

The bike was one of two – named William and Bramwell after two of the first leaders of The Salvation Army – which were donated to the enterprise and are now available for hire at £30 for a day, or £45 with a picnic.

Brian Gibbs, southern regional manager for The Salvation Army, said: “Recycles helps people rebuild their lives whilst providing a valuable service and resource for the community.

“By helping them gain self-confidence and a belief in their future we see individuals grow, develop, feel valued and contribute to their local community.”
