SWINDON Mayor Nick Martin has resigned from the post following remarks he made about disabled people.

Coun Martin (Con, Shaw) came under pressure to resign after being asked to apologise for using derogatory language towards disabled people when he was overheard saying: “Are we still letting those Mongols have sex with each other?”

In his letter of resignation, Coun Martin wrote: "Following the accusations against me, I have cooperated with the independent Standards investigation, I have accepted the findings, I have made new apologies and am abiding by the other recommendations from the Standards Assessment Panel.

"However, it is clear that this will not stop the attacks on the Office and person of Mayor. Therefore, I deem it best for the people of Swindon to resign."

Now we are asking Adver readers if stepping down was the right decision.

The disgraceful Swindon Labour Councillors deliberately targeted the Conservative party and unfortunately the incumbent Mayor gave them the ammunition they used with unceasing determination for political point scoring which has belittled Swindon in the eyes of the world.

Well done Swindon Labour Councillors you must all be so very proud - this had absolutely nothing to do with the use of the term he used it was all down to local nobodies elected for representing the people of Swindon playing party politics with the result that Swindon's name is being ridiculed around the world.

Labour Councillors won this battle against one individual but the sole loser was Swindon.

He shouldn't have resigned. HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN SACKED by the weak and vacuous Tories. But we all know the Tories will do anything to cling on to power.

Oh dear...calm down, foaming at the mouth isn't attractive.

Accept the fact that, although you may share Martin's outdated and shameful views, the majority of society finds them abhorrent. I've said before, this is not a right vs left issue, it's a simple right vs wrong. Martin should have resigned months ago, failing that he should have been sacked.....by desperately trying to cling to power, both he and his Tory colleagues are the ones that have brought ridicule on the town.

Anyway, he's gone now, although I note he hasn't resigned as a Councillor, or had the whip removed. Guess that puts his half arsed apology into context.

So a tory councillor spouts fascist views, entirely in line with the leadership's policy of neglecting the needs of the disabled, and that is labour's fault?

It is utterly wrong that Martin has resigned now.
The foul old bigot should have been sacked as soon as these comments came to light, boh as Mayor and as a Councillor.

It is the 21st century and this kind of bilge belongs in history.

Good bye and good riddance.
