ON the anniversary of the tragic death of 20-year-old Jack Savage, his mother Tanya is taking on an epic challenge.

She is set to do the Inca Trail in Peru and is close to raising £7,000, but wants to push on for her target of £8,000 before she takes on the 26-mile expedition on May 15.

The journey will take her nine days and put her 4,200 feet above sea level.

And it will coincide with the day her son lost his life.

Jack was killed in a collision on the A419 last May.

His best friend Jack Hiscock, who was driving at the time, was sentenced to 28 months in prison after admitting causing death by dangerous driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Tanya and Jack’s father Steve both made an emotional appeal to spare Hiscock from prison during sentencing.

After an extremely difficult year for the family, Tanya is testing her resolve to raise money for terminally ill children by donating her funds to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

She will be navigating mountains in her bid to raise money and she has been preparing for the gruelling challenge with a personal trainer from Next Generation three days a week.

Steve said: “It is coming around to a year now since it happened. It seems like a lot of things have happened in that time, but a year can go by very quickly.

“Tanya goes on the walk in a couple of weeks time, and fundraising has gone really well. Next Generation have given her a personal trainer, who she sees three days a week to get prepared.

“It is the final push now but she’s already done brilliantly.”

Tanya said: “When I think of Jack I am grateful for the 20 years he was with us, grateful that he led a full, happy and fulfilling life right up to the end.

“That is why I decided to do something so positive, rewarding and challenging from something so tragic.

“There are some children who never have the chance to lead a full life, because they are terminally ill and they do not have a very long life expectancy.

“That is why I want to raise as much money as I can for Make-A-Wish, who are able to bring some happiness into the lives of those children.”

Andy Holland, the events and challenges manager at Make-A-Wish, said: “We are extremely grateful to Tanya for selecting Make-A-Wish Foundation UK as the beneficiary of her trek.”
