THE sun shone down on families enjoying fun and games at the annual Wanborough May Day Fayre yesterday.

Hundreds of people attended the annual event, now in its 12th year, which took place at the village hall, with attractions including bouncy castles, a coconut shy and a penalty shootout among many others.

The fair and the village’s scarecrow trail, which is on until Sunday, are aimed at raising £10,000 – some towards Wanborough’s purchase of the village hall from the Bristol Diocese and the remainder to the hall’s management committee pot.

Tessa Lanstein, one of the organisers, said it had been a lovely, busy day and they were delighted at the number of people who had come to support it. She said: “I think one of reasons it is so popular is because of the number of things we have on offer.

“I love organising this event as it is always so well supported and has grown over the years. We have about 120 people involved organising and overseeing stalls which shows how much of a community effort the fair is.”

Other highlights of the day included a plate-breaking competition, welly tossing and craft stalls with a range of refreshments and treats available.

Dale Curry, who was manning the All About Fun stall, said: “The candy floss has been a really good seller today as I think everyone could smell it in the air and they’ve been tempted to have some as a treat. The event has been really good fun and there has been a great atmosphere.”

The annual scarecrow trail, now in its 10th year, featured 56 celebrity-themed scarecrows dotted around Wanborough.
