YOUNGSTERS from all over the town turned out yesterday despite the windy weather to take part in Children and Families Day at the Swindon Festival of Literature.

Children took part in three different events during the day at Lower Shaw Farm in West Swindon to celebrate storytelling, reading, and writing.

Five-year-old Gethan Burnham from Westlea was one of the youngsters who enjoyed the day out.

He said: “I played on the ropes and have been in the house, and I sat around the fire and listened to stories.

“I also saw Winnie the Witch and that was lots of fun too.”

Gethan’s dad, Roo, also said he had enjoyed the family day.

The 45-year-old said: “It’s brilliant, we’ve been coming here for a few years now.

“It’s just a great set up and there are always lots of things to do.”

From 10am bardic teller Chris Park led children in campfire storytelling, while from 10.30am rainbow faerie Daisy-May, played by Andria Walton, took children on an interactive creative journey through books, paints, stories and rhymes about magical beings.

From 10.30am children could also have a go at writing and designing a whole new alphabet while learning more about the printing press in a workshop led by Vicky Hirsch.

There was also a chance to read and draw with award-winning illustrator Korky Paul and his sidekick, Winnie the Witch, and enjoy a poetry walk around the farm with storytelling poet Hilda Sheehan.
