Musical hopefuls want a shot at Bugsy

HUNDREDS of aspiring performers queued outside the Wyvern Theatre to audition for a part in its Summer Youth Production yesterday morning.

There were around 250 opportunities available for young people, aged between nine and 2, to be involved in the August show, Bugsy Malone.

This is the 20th year that the theatre’s youth production has taken place with Bugsy Malone being its first in 1994.

Director Matthew Dye said: “The kids have a lot of fun as this is a great opportunity for them and it is not something which is offered everywhere. Bugsy is one of those shows which has a large cast so it gives chances to actors, singers and dancers while we also get as many young people involved backstage as we can.

“There is a lot of responsibility but I think the young people enjoy that and want to produce something that they are proud of. As we go on the team become less of a company and more of a family and there’s always an awful lot of sad face when the run finishes.”

One of those hoping to get a part in the production was 10-year-old Kitty who went to the Devizes Road theatre with her mother Helen Roper.

Kitty said: “I was part of last year’s show and really enjoyed it. Matt is a great director and was hilarious always wanting to make us laugh. My favourite part of it all is when the show finishes and you get to hear the applause of everyone in the audience.”
