Sun columnist Katie Hopkins labels Swindon 'ugly place no-one cares about'

Swindon Advertiser: Sun columnist Katie Hopkins labels Swindon 'ugly place no-one cares about' Sun columnist Katie Hopkins labels Swindon 'ugly place no-one cares about'

INFAMOUS Sun columnist Katie Hopkins has struck again, sparking outrage in the town after labelling Swindon an “ugly place no-one cares about”.

Swindon became The Apprentice contestant’s latest target in an opinion piece today in the national newspaper discussing cleric Abu Hamza’s terrorism conviction in New York earlier this week.

In the article, she hits out at his family for continuing to live in London at the expense, she claims, of the taxpayer. She goes on to suggest they move to Swindon instead.

“Surely the most sensible thing would be to move them to an ugly place no one cares about - like Swindon,” she wrote.

“Find them a grotty semi in the rough end of town next to a roundabout and a KFC and everyone will be happy.

“They can crack on doing Swindon-type things such as, erm, watching traffic, and the taxpayer can then save a bob or two.”

Her inflammatory comments caused a stir in the town and were condemned by residents, MPs and councillors alike. Owen Reynolds, of Pinehurst, was appalled by her description of Swindon.

The father-of-one, originally from Wales, was posted in Wroughton by the RAF in 1956.

He later married and moved to Swindon.

“I made Swindon my home and to see that this woman has the audacity to write this in a national newspaper annoys me immensely,” said the 76-year-old.

“She said ‘put them in the rough end of town’ like Swindon is a scruffy and dirty town but Swindon is not like that. Just walk around the Town Gardens. They are beautiful.”

Thats actually a very good point and one many forget. Its an opinion, not necessarily a fact as everyone will have different opinions about lots of things. For example ones persons classic tune may be another's fingernails on a blackboard and ones Haute Cuisine will be another's pig swill.

There is no right or wrong only differing opinions and she is entitled to hers the same way every one on here is entitled to theirs.

We must have one of the scruffiest industrial estates in the country, just do a drive past in Cheney Manor.

Complete dereliction, burnt out buildings, broken windows everywhere and building after building empty.

That's just the industrial part, then look at the town centre around Commercial road. Empty shop after empty shop and that is just one area.

Some residential areas are no better, I will not name any in case I cause offence but everyone knows where they are.

So Katie Hopkins makes a very good case for a bit of inward thinking.

The Locarno, again this building is ugly and falling to the ground but both buildings have potential to look fantastic and could be used once again...but no the council are just too stupid. Also why on earth get rid of the once spectacular Tabernacle for that sack of tripe that's there now...unbelievable. Swindon born and bred but agree with this horse faced trollop for once.

We have wonderful countryside around us, regents circus should hopefully improve the town centre and the old town area is doing well. The biggest highlight of Swindon is the mannington retail park. It's thriving and you can barely park there on a weekend. It goes to show that there are quality people in Swindon who want quality places to shop. Swindon's not great, but it's not bad

We know it's not too bad. Anyone who drives East of here towards Reading, Slough and 'multicultural' London will realise how good we have it. Personally I can't wait to get back here when away I love it.

Yes the Town Centre is crap so what?

The question is who is to blame for that? The answer is we are as we elected the morons that run the town!

Some residential areas are no better, I will not name any in case I cause offence but everyone knows where they are.

So Katie Hopkins makes a very good case for a bit of inward thinking.

We have wonderful countryside around us, regents circus should hopefully improve the town centre and the old town area is doing well. The biggest highlight of Swindon is the mannington retail park. I have lived in Swindon since 1957 (in a place beginning with P) and have seen lots of changes, some good, some bad. I now live in another place beginning with P. I can't pretend that it doesn't have it's problems but the other day, walking in the sunshine, so much looked so pleasant. I love looking at the gardens and so many have matured and were full of colour. People like my parents planted Fuschias, Lilacs etc, after living in a flat in London it was exciting to have a garden.
You could hear lots of birds singing, no shortage of sparrows around here.
The voluntary groups in Swindon are very active, helping to improve life for others, we have a lot of caring people here.

More wild insults.

That said, I agree with you about people getting a sense of perspective.

Obviously, there are far superior towns and cities (many of them close by, rather unfortunately) but there are certainly plenty that are much worse.

Slough, Peterborough, Bradford... you *really* wouldn't want to live there.
Still following me about then?

I am allowed an opinion. If I think someone is an idiot then I am entitled to that view. Ditto moron, cretin etc.
Now run along and troll someone else who you see as a Lefty.

Maybe Hamza's family would be better off living in her place of birth Barnstaple in Devon. This woman has real mental problems, must have been fed cider instead of being breast fed at birth. What type of person would get personal like she did in another of her articles about people with ginger hair and another one about the Scots, Maybe she thinks she's funny or just wants to be controversial, she's neither and is best ignored. She obviously thinks it's OK to have a go at the colour of people's hair or where they come from or where people live, but the truth is she's a woman with a chip on her shoulder after a failed sex encounter with a ginger haired Scotsman on a roundabout who live in Swindon. The woman seems to have racist tendencies and reportedly enjoys fresco sex in the park after consuming too much of the cider.

She's not the type of person I would like to meet, too full of her own opinions with an ego to match the size of her nose.

The Sun should bring back Kelvin Mckenzie as their editor, and get some decent humorist like Little John back, Rod Liddle is OK , but columnist, Mensch is worse than Hopkins, Katie Price I would never read and I can just about tolerate Moore and Kelly.

I only really buy the paper to do the crosswords with my breakfast.

I really don't think anyone is saying it's perfect, just not as bad as some places, I think Swindon suffers from being pretty average in all honesty, having been born and raised in Slough, I can tell you I'm not speaking from a lack of experience, like you, I don't live in Swindon, but have business interests there and find it on the whole a reasonably pleasant place where people generally afford you a smile and good morning if you're prepared to make the effort yourself, as for the woman, she's welcome to her opinion and looking at the responses she's ruffled a few feathers, taking the positives out of that, I'd say that many people in the town obviously care about it and what's said about it, which in my mind can only be a good thing :-D

That'll be why so many new houses are needed in the house all the time. A surprising number of people have also moved in.
Hopkins comes from London as do my family. If you think Swindon is so bad, I suggest you go and spend a few days, or better still nights, wandering around Peckham or somewhere and then see what you think.
Swindon has problems, so has everywhere. It is a working town and a pretty decent place to bring up kids safely. There are reasonable numbers of jobs and the house prices are fairly affordable (comparatively). You comment on everyone being awful but that's patent nonsense, how can a place be full of awful people. Maybe it's just noone nice wanted to spend time with you. If you didn't like it here fair enough but if you have left and you don't like it so much, what on earth are you doing on Swindon's local paper website commenting?

You mean, you decided to move away.

Yet still comment on the newspaper website in a town you decided not to live in any longer.

Plenty of people are staying in Swindon and also moving to the town.

It can very nicely do without the likes of you. In fact, it's decidedly more pleasant already.

For gods sake, do you actually think she went on a research mission examining the pros and cons of various towns before deciding on Swindon? It's was just hyperbole in order to make the the article more interesting. In fact, if you look at the house prices in Swindon compared to surrounding areas then she actually has a point.

Look at Swindon being mentioned in the past on shows such as Have I Got News for You, Red Dwarf etc. What's the common theme? - it's a dull soul-less place. It's even chosen by marketing companies as being an 'average' town. Whether it's true or not is irrelevant . It's just like picking a stock photo for a newspaper article.

There is no shortage of delusions of adequacy in this town.
I think it may of always been this way but I have only noticed it more in recent years middle classes with good jobs and the retired believing they are the social betters of those middle classes who seem to only have one ambition to be "dodgy and dangerous"
Some seriously mixed up ambitions here.

With reference to you example of posh???? Living in an old folks home on bath rd does not mean you have a Bath rd address.

Its strange you call others idiots,,,,,,,,
Despite your poor grammar and spelling mistakes you still see fit to highlight what you see as a lack of intelligence in others??? The hypocrisy of that either dosent show itself to you or you do not have the ability to understand.

Using "mother" jokes,,,,clap,,,clap
,,,,clap,,,I understand you are trolling and just looking for a little attention I also suspect that your moving away is a lie and that you are just looking to attempt to upset people.
One of your teachers should take your phone off of you if you keep using it in class.
Your thoughtless line of insults fits in well with KH she is an idiot as well.
My only regret in this thread is adding another comment to anything that has this things name attached to it.

Bless you for trying but go back to saying rude words with your little friends you are boring and incapable of debate or even trolling.

She's the female equivalent of Jeremy Clarkson - a wind up merchant. Ignore her and she'll go away, attention is what people like her exist on. Does anyone really give a monkeys about her opinion?

Let's face it, Swindon's similar to a lot of places in England, with similar problems, but far nicer than some places I could mention (but won't out of respect). The upper middle class tory yobbos like Katie Hopkins can sneer all they like at anywhere that isn't a place they personally would like to live, but just remember most people don't live in garden cities, they live in urban settlements just like Swindon - slag us off and they slag off a large proportion of the population. To treat all people that they don't consider their social equals is incredibly arrogant.

PS - this is coming from someone who spent most of their life growing up in Swindon, hasn't lived there in over ten years but still comes back regularly to see friends and support the mighty STFC - so for anyone who says Swindon doesn't have any community spirit or local pride, I took mine with me.
