ADVENTUROUS youngsters had a taste of the high seas on Wednesday when they took part in half term fun in Royal Wootton Bassett Library.

Around 15 children and 11 adults dropped in at the library in Boroughfields between 2.30pm and 3.30pm to take part in a pirate fun event.

Library supervisor Pat Hughes said that it was a fun day had by all. She said: “It was only supposed to be an hour but it went on for an hour and a half because the children were enjoying themselves so much and they still had things they wanted to finish off.

“It was a great success, everybody seemed to enjoy themselves and even the adults joined in with the activities and it seemed like everybody got a lot out if it.”

The children, who were aged between four and eight, took part in a variety of activities during the session including reading, making treasure maps and portholes.

Pat said: “All the activities had a pirate theme. There was pirate-themed reading and pirate themed rhymes.

“They also made very imaginative treasure maps which they stained with tea bags and portholes using paper plates and they also contributed to the collage we have in the library, which is of a seascape with a pirate ship.”

Pat added: “The event was part of our ongoing commitment to developing a love of reading in children and to show them that the library can be a fun place to be and come along to.”

The event was one of several that have been taking place in and around Swindon to celebrate half term. All week at Lydiard Park youngsters have been enjoying a Frederick the Fox Club Season Trail to learn more about the spring wildlife.

They also have a last-chance opportunity to see the Customs and Crafts Exhibition, which features work from the local branch of the West Country Embroiderers in Lydiard House.

Meanwhile at the Haydon Centre children have enjoyed a variety of activities while their parents are at work at the hi5 Camp.
