ANGUS Macpherson, Police and Crime Commissioner for Wiltshire and Swindon, is in hospital after suffering a heart attack while at a job in Trowbridge.

Mr Macpherson, who was voted into office in November 2012, suffered a cardiac arrest while on duty in Trowbridge and was immediately rushed to hospital where he is expected to remain for some time.

He is thought to be in a serious condition and his diary has been suspended while he undergoes treatment.

Discussions are currently underway into who will be taking on responsibility for Mr Macpherson’s duties while he recovers in hospital.

A spokesman for his office said: “Police and Crime Commissioner for Wiltshire and Swindon Angus Macpherson has been taken ill while undertaking his duties on Friday morning.

“Mr Macpherson has been taken to hospital.

“Further media updates will be given if and when appropriate."

Angus Macpherson previously served with Wiltshire Police for seven years prior to his election as Police and Crime Commissioner. He assumed his role overseeing Wiltshire Police on November 22, 2012 and his first Police and Crime Plan was published in March 2013.

Since he took up office, Mr Macpherson has awarded a number of community grants to assist policing at a local level through his £1m Innovation Fund.

He has overseen the first police cadet scheme being launched at Swindon earlier this year, and released funds to tackle homophobia in schools and pay for a sex outreach worker to work with women around Manchester Road.

The final round of funding, released in April of this year, focused on helping vulnerable people while being dealt with by police, whether young people, victims or offenders.

Mr Macpherson was educated at St Hugh’s School in West Lavington where he is now a governor. After leaving school he worked as a management trainee in London and gained a degree in Business Studies. Well-wishers have spoken of their hope that Mr Macpherson recovers soon and is able to return to his duties as soon as he feels fit enough.

Pat Geenty, chief constable for Wiltshire Police, tweeted: “I am sure all colleagues will join me in wishing Angus Macpherson @PCCWiltsSwindon a speedy recovery following him being taken ill today.”

North Swindon MP, Justin Tomlinson, said: “My thoughts are with Angus and his family at this difficult time. “Angus works exceptionally hard in his role, in particular championing community approaches to tackling crime. “We all hope he will have a swift recovery.”
