Seven-year-old Lily tears round Race For Life course
LITTLE Lily Mulcock achieved what some adults never have when she ran the whole five kilometre route in the Race For Life.
The seven-year-old from Cricklade joined hundreds of other women who took part in the challenge to kick back at cancer and raise money for vital research.
It was the first time the pupil from St Sampson's Infant School had taken part in the race and, despite the distance, she completed the whole route in only 49 minutes.
Lily said: “I play tag at school and I play football but I didn’t really do any running before.
“I am very pleased with myself because I am only seven and only have little legs and can’t run as far as other people.
“When I finished it I was really happy but I was also very tired.”
Lily was joined along the route by her mother, Laura, and her dog Pippa, and together they raised £150 for Cancer Research UK.
Lily said: “It was really fun. It was a really good thing to do to try and raise money for cancer.”
Laura was very impressed that Lily had taken part in the event despite being so young.
She said: “I am so proud of her. “I don’t think she realised how far it was though, so when she said she was already tired after the warm-up I was a bit worried.
“But we made it all the way around and we made it more quickly than I thought.
“We were all in pink, even Pippa the dog had a pink tutu.”
Laura has taken part in the annual race four times, and said her main motivation was to protect her children from the disease in the future.
She said: “Cancer affects everybody, everybody knows someone who has had cancer, anyone can get cancer.
“It doesn’t matter who you are or how old you are, you can get it.
“I just want to do something to make sure these children don’t get it.
“It’s already being shown that the money put into cancer research is working. We now have a vaccine for the girls and survival rates are getting better as well.”
l Our roll of honour in Monday’s Race For Life supplement featured only the names of those who had signed up to the event by Thursday when online registration closed. Unfortunately, this was the only list Cancer Research UK could provide us with. Several names, including Lily’s and those people who signed up on the day were missed off the list despite completing the race
