Old Town hairdressers forced to close down after 46 years in business

Talk of the Town on Devizes Road

First published in News

LONG-established salon Talk of the Town will close its doors for the final time today after allegedly going into liquidation.

The Devizes Road business, which has been running since 1968, offered hair and beauty treatments. The store’s management did not want to discuss the problems they’d encountered but confirmed that the salon will close for good at 5.30pm this evening.

However, several customers suggested that the company’s staff had been poached to work at a new Old Town salon.

One customer, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I’d been told by my hairdresser that the old owners had bought the old running shop in Old Town near the car park and were setting up a new hair salon there.

“Apparently a lot of the staff are moving over there. I’ve been going to Talk of the Town for years to get my hair cut, it’s a shame.”

Some of the staff were aware of what was happening as I'd heard the rumour at least six weeks ago, when a friend was told by a 'senior stylist' but my poor hairdresser was completely in the dark. It was obviously on its way out as it was getting shabbier by the week. It's a shame, but at least the new salon will hopefully be more modern.

The owner has not been bothered about this salon for years, I've been going there for over 15 years & the staff have always been fantastic, especially one stylist in particular! It's been going down hill for over a year now ever since it was trying to be sold, looking shabby & like a ghost town, not great for a 'high quality salon' the staff were being treated very unfairly & when they had the opportunity to leave the sinking ship they did! I can't blame them!
Good luck to all of them in the new salon & it's one in the eye for the owner of Talk of the Town!

I worked at talk of the town for nearly 10 years! This hasn't come as a surprise and no one was poached to go to another salon! The owner who is now sunning himself in Australia hasn't cared about the place for a long time. I feel sorry for his dad who made that place what it was in it's heyday. I was so happy to work there everyone was really lovely and I made friends for life. I left In march as I saw this coming. people were leaving because of how it was being run and because of other issues not because of poaching. I say good luck to them. As for the people who stayed till the bitter end and got totally screwed over by the so called boss. I hope they manage to pick themselves up and move on. They will be better of out of there I know I was. The place was so run down and shabby and needed attention and the poor customers paying top salon prices till the end! It's sad that this has happened. But it just goes to show how some people don't care who they have to screw over to get where they want to be in life

Well said. I felt so embarrassed that I knew more about what was happening than my stylist. Hope all the staff get sorted quickly as they were brilliant - despite the terrible owner, who swanned in and out like god's gift!

I know a few people who worked there and the owner who now resides in the land of oz is to blame for this.
As with all these things it's the poor workers who suffer while the owner suns himself.
Good luck to all.

Sad to see it go, I also got my very first perm in there, cried my eyes out afterwards! It had an excellent reputation back in the 80s/90s. Must admit to drive past it's been looking shabby for the last few years. Hope the talent find new jobs elsewhere and they'll realise it was probably for the best.

It came as no surprise when I heard the salon was closing as it has been going downhill for some time but clearly some of the hairdressers who have moved to the owners sisters salon helped put the final nail in the coffin one in particular who was asked to leave immediately and before her notice was up due to slanderous rumours/lies she was witnessed spreading about the salon potentially causing more damage to talk of the town and the business of the self employed hairdressers. Claiming the girls were not poached is not exactly true as a meeting was set up in November by a former owner Of the salon with the self employed/chair rent hairdresser to which they were asked if a new salon was set up would u leave to which most of them did! That sounds very much like poaching to me I feel sorry for the ones left behind as the owner and salon was still coming under fire from bitter hairdressers even after they had left having total disregard for anyone else's business they could potentially cause harm to by being so vindictive and selfish. I just hope the owner of the salon they have gone to keeps a close eye and runs a tight ship as clearly they are capable of anything and not in a good way. Good luck to the ones who have gone elsewhere u had a lucky escape not just from talk of the town closure but the disrespectful immature and amateur hairdressers u worked with.

You can't blame the self employed hairdressers for wanting to better themselves and move to a better equipped salon with all the mod cons. This establishment has been left to ruin by the current owner.
They are also quite within their rights to let there customers know if they are moving salon and why.
Strange that so many of the staff have all gone to this new salon if these rumours are true about people being vindictive.

TalkoftheTown says...

Statement :
I was not going to respond but i cannot sit back and read the ridicules comments from my sister and some of the people who I kept employed.
I was in a no win situation when i decided to move to OZ. I could of just left as my sister owed me a year off as she had taken a year off earlier, And partnerships are equal weather you are a man or a woman.
But also cared about the people that I was leaving behind in the shop. Although reading some of these comments from them i wished i hadn't.

My sister Kelly left talk of the town owing it a lot of money. Which can be proved through the FINAL accounts. If necessary. So I can back up this claim.

I took on her debt she left in the shop and let her walk away from her responsibilities as a parter in the business, if i hadn't the shop would of shut at that point.
All the staff would of been without work. That is also a fact.

She refused to repay the money back, and said she could not run the shop on her own because she had two children, So the shop would of closed.

She also did leave the salon in October 2013
I also have an email to prove that, as I let her work there for free for a year after the partnership ended to build up a clientele, as she never did much hairdressing in the salon.
So she is lying saying she worked for Aspire for two years, it obviously would make her look worse if she just left opened a salon took the staff so ruined the family business. But that is exactly what she did.
I had a buyer for talk of the town, as i knew it would be difficult to run it from Australia.
But my sister Kelly also ruined that sale when she found out, by spreading rumours of taking staff and opening a shop. Which has now turned out to be true. I have an email from the buyer stating this, so this also can be proven.

There was debt on talk of the town which has been cleared since Kelly left. It was just starting to go back into profit. Then money would of been spent on it.
But when 9 members of staff leave, it become impossible to continue.

It is true all my interest was not in talk of the town and I was not going to re-invest in it again until it was in profit, which if I was back in Swindon it would of been done sooner.
So I can't blame the staff for wanting somewhere nicer to work, I totally understand that, I had only taken the business on to stop it closing.
I was hoping to sell it to someone who had the passion to carry it on, but if i had sold after what had happened, i would of had to guarantee the rent, which after what my sister had just done to ruin the sale i was not prepared to do, so i could not even sell it.

It was offered back to my father but he was going to bring kelly back in which I did not agree with as she had just walked away from her responsibilities and debt, the feud between us was the downfall of this shop.
it is very hurtful when you see your own sister lying to make herself look better,

I did draw back some of the money in 2011 that was owed from the business otherwise she would of owed even more money on the FINAL accounts.

In hindsight i should of just made her pay the whole money back, and made her run the place as she was meant to be an equal partner, and I was still owed a year off.
But it is hard when it is family. And that was paying my fathers pension.

A lot goes on behind the scenes in a family business, and lots of rumours and accusations have been made. but what i have said above can be backed up with evidence and the FINAL accounts of the partnership.
This shop now has destroyed this family, I would say all sides are to blame, each of them handling things wrong.
There will never be a happy ending and that's a shame.

Talk of the Town has employed and trained a lot of people over the past 46 year, with the large majority leaving on very good terms and even starting there own businesses, but in business you always get the odd disgruntled employee who left many years ago who try and stick the knife in.
This could be looked at as slanderous and libellous.
Everything above can be proven its not here say or gossip. so be careful to dispute something that you cannot prove. Just because someone has gossiped and told you a lie, or you feel loyal to them.

I am not going to respond after this, unless Kelly wants me to produce the evidence but this needed to be said.
It's hard to defend yourself when you live the other side of the world.
But what I have said above is the truth, and can be backed up not by words or gossip but by paperwork and emails.

What's done is done now and we need to all move on.
If the advert want permission to print this comment you can. I can back up every word. I would say I don't like airing this in public but we never started it. we have a right to defend what is being said about us.
I'm sorry to talk of the town customers and the loyal staff that stayed on.
Statement : I was not going to respond but i cannot sit back and read the ridicules comments from my sister and some of the people who I kept employed. She also did leave the salon in October 2013 I also have an email to prove that, as I let her work there for free for a year after the partnership ended to build up a clientele, as she never did much hairdressing in the salon.
