WILTSHIRE Fire & Rescue Service is reminding people to ‘take extra care’ when firefighters go out on strike for 24 hours from this morning.

As part of a national dispute between the Fire Brigades’ Union and the Government over pension reforms, union members will be striking from 9am today until 9am tomorrow.

During this time, the Fire & Rescue Service will be providing a reduced emergency response, although fire cover is being maintained across the county.

Chief Fire Officer Simon Routh-Jones said: “We are very fortunate that we have so many on-call firefighters who are not members of the FBU, and who are willing to make themselves available for additional hours during strike periods.

“That said, we will be operating with less resources than on a normal day – if you ring 999, we will respond, but it may take a little longer than usual for us to arrive. We would therefore urge everyone to take extra care to stay safe, which will hopefully reduce the number of calls we receive.”

Businesses are reminded to check their fire risk assessments and ensure any staff members working over the 24-hour period are fully briefed for an emergency.
