IMAGINATION lit up two venues in the town last week as both the Central Library and The Core opened public exhibitions showcasing local artistic talent.
At The Core juice bar in Devizes Road, Cradle Contemporary opened their exhibition called If The Bough Breaks, which is taken from the nursery rhyme Rock-A-Bye Baby.
Around 10 artists, who each produced between one and four pieces for the exhibition, will have their work displayed there until the end of the month.
Eleanore May, director of Cradle Contemporary, who are hosting the exhibition, said: “We put out an open call for artists and we had people coming back from all over the country – from Chippenham to London and from everywhere.
“We had to choose from them what would ultimately be displayed before we put on the exhibition.
“It’s quite surprising the number of different ways that people have taken it.
“The theme is actually a quote from the nursery rhyme, Rock-A-Bye Baby, so some of them have gone for concepts around cradles.
“Others have focused on balance and tension because if the bough breaks then everything falls.
“We’ve put on a couple of exhibitions before and each time the response gets bigger and bigger so we were very pleased that so many artists came forward.”
Meanwhile, another exhibition featuring the work of 20 artists from the Stratton Education Centre went on display in the Central Library.
Bethan Witherow, art teacher at the centre, organised the exhibition, which will be on display for the next two weeks.
She said: “It’s an exhibition of students’ and staff work ranging from Year 7 to Year 11.
“This is the first time we have held the exhibition and we hope to hold it twice a year on successive occasions.
“It went really, really well. We had a good number of people coming to look at the exhibition on Thursday.
“The students could choose their own work and their own theme and worked really hard and there are some really high quality pieces.
“It’s an opportunity for the students to express themselves and their own thoughts and feelings.”
Visitors can view the exhibition in the library during the next two weeks.
If The Bough Breaks will be on display at The Core until June 30.
