CALLS have been made to make safe the notorious Oasis underpass, known as 'muggers alley' because it has been the scene of a number of violent offences and thefts.

Police have launched a murder inquiry after the body of a man was discovered at the notorious spot late last night, the victim of multiple stab wounds.

It is the latest in a string of crimes to take place in the area...

  • In 2000, mugging victim Paul Bowen called for better lighting and security there after he was attacked and then followed home by a gang on two occasions.
  • In 2002, drug addict Anthony Walsh attacked a man who tried to detain him after he stole CDs from cars in the Oasis car park.
  • In 2010, a teenage gang was jailed for carrying out a series of violent muggings in the underpass, having admitted causing grievous bodily harm in two robberies.
  • In 2006, a 71-year-old pensioner from Rodbourne declared she would not use the route again after being robbed at knifepoint in March of that year.
  • In September 2011 a man and his accomplice robbed a teenager just outside the underpass, and was jailed for two-and-a-half years.
  • In August 2012, a trio of armed robbers used the path to carry out a daylight robbery and made away with cash from their victim.
  • In December 2012, Harry Tabener ended a 10-day crime spree in the underpass by threatening and robbing a 17-year-old boy who had been walking there alone.
  • Even as recently as May of this year, a 24-year-old woman was suddenly assaulted when an unknown male approached from behind and landed a single blow to the back of her head, leaving her with serious injuries.
