RAIL commuters in Swindon could be set for a boost after it emerged the government is set to install high-speed Wi-fi on a number of key routes, including the mainline to London.

The move will partly be paid for by the £53 million fine Network Rail was hit with yesterday for late delays.

It is hoped work will start on the £90 million scheme shortly and will be in place by 2017.

The latest announcement comes as Network Rail continues with the electrification of the line and plans are being drawn up to link Swindon with Heathrow.

Swindon North MP Justin Tomlinson said: “This is very positive for commuters and will be warmly welcomed by travellers.

“This is another part of the government’s ongoing investment in the railways which is at its highest level since the Victorian times.”

Network Rail Chief Executive Mark Carne said: “The increasing availability of mobile broadband on trains will mean rail travel is an even more attractive option for many people as they can make better productive use of their journey time.

“We welcome the announcement today of the additional funds to roll this out across the network more quickly.”
