EMMA DUNN meets a group of youngsters who are taking aim with the junior rifle club

YOUNG people who are interested in getting into shooting can take aim with Wroughton Junior Rifle Club.

The club, based at Wroughton Scout Hall in Weirside Avenue, is now accepting people aged from 10 to 17 on to its second introductory course into target shooting.

The six-week course starts on September 12, and each session will take place every Friday evening.

The course sessions will focus on safety and discipline, with participants instructed in basic handling and shooting, at a variety of distances and positions, with open sights and scopes.

The course is instructed by National Small-bore Rifle Association qualified tutors.

Wroughton Junior Rifle Club chairman Matt Bather said: “We are halfway through our first ever introductory course and it’s going well so far.

“All 20 places were taken up really quickly for the first course and some of the people who didn’t get on have already booked onto the September course.

“The introductory course into target shooting is accessible to all. We have one girl on the current course and we have got a few kids with learning difficulties taking part.

“One of the best shooters we currently have on our course has those difficulties.”

Each session, which lasts for one hour, take place at the 10m indoor range at Wroughton Scout Hall on Fridays.

The session for the younger children takes place from 7pm to 8pm and the session for older children takes place from 8.15pm to 9.15pm.

There is no obligation to become a member of Wroughton Junior Rifle Club on completion of the course, but the club hopes participants will want to go on to learn more about rifle and target shooting, and improve their skills.
