More than 5,500 motorists caught by Swindon's new bus lane cameras in first month

SINCE the introduction of camera enforcement at bus lanes and gates at the end of June, more than 5,500 warnings and fines have been given to drivers.

On June 30 the council introduced five mobile cameras to be moved at random to the different gates and lanes.

For the first three weeks only warnings were issued but more than 4,500 were given out, predominantly at bus gates.

From July 21, Penalty Charge Notices of £60 were given to drivers, with 1,057 handed out already.

In one case, a driver was given 20 warnings for using the same bus gate but this stopped after the first fine was handed out.

The aim of the plan is to improve the efficiency of the public transport system with council leaders saying the number of drivers breaking the rules justifies the introduction of the cameras.

Councillor Dale Heenan (Con, Covingham and Dorcan), Cabinet member for Highwaysand Transport, said: "We did not want to have to install cameras, but the number of people caught using bus lanes and bus gates shows the scale of the problem. These features are important parts of the transport network in Swindon, because they reduce congestion and encourage the use of timely public transport.”

Where are these bus lane/gates? I've never seen them. Good idea of the council though, to give priority to empty buses.

Why are these bus gates & lanes enforced 24 hours a day? Buses only run until 11.30pm.

Maybe the council should look at the overall problem with traffic flows/congestion??
Hang on that's common sense something that doesn't appear to be on the council

Oh come on you are expecting drivers to use a bit of common sense and drive responsibly and not think that the laws of the road are there for them to pick and choose when they obey them to suit themselves. Not sure what planet that would be.

That said the question of bus lanes is always a tough one bearing in mind the vast majority travel by car and bus lanes are empty for about 95% of the time. Do they help traffic in general or do they not? What a shame it wasn't a driving ban handed out, it would of been well deserved.
Slim 1978, the bus lanes on Queens Drive only prohibit cars between 7am until 7pm and are certainly not 24hrs, as far as I'm aware all bus lanes show the times that they are closed to general traffic and bus gates are for those alone, buses.

So much for Swindon Council's much vaunted 'pro-motorist' credentials.

It's obvious they've missed the mountains of cash that the Speed Cameras raked in and so have decided to try and recoup some from the Bus Lane Cameras.

£65,000 in the first month alone, kerching! Wonder what that'll get wasted on.

All this will mean is that drivers will be too scared to ever use them (even between 7pm and 7am when they so graciously allowed to) and so the roads we've already paid for a thousand times over will go completely unused apart from the buses that drive around all day with only their drivers onboard.

Terrible move by the Council.

I would bet good money that many if not most of these warnings are invalid. I was one of the many drivers sent a multiple warning for using the bus lane on Cricklade Road.

That bus lane is 7 am to 7 pm and I drive down it at half 5 in the morning when it is legal for me to do so. As usual SBC could not "run a bath" let alone anything in a brothel.

Don't know why you got thumbs down for this comment, I'm fed up with drivers choosing which laws to ignore as a matter of convenience. My current bug is with drivers in car parks (ie. Tesco) where "No Entry" signs seems to have a footnote that I am unable to see that reads "Unless there is an empty space that you can not possibly afford to miss out on". I actually had abuse from a cyclist the other day because they turned down a one-way street in the wrong direction and nearly hit the front of my car, and apparently that was my fault! Public transport within Swindon is an absolute joke as is the road planning.

Two lanes into one in at least 5 places in Swindon where drivers shortcutting think that they can bully those in the nearside lane - Why not adopt a 'give way alternately' policy.

How many times do YOU see a double decker bus having priority but contains hardly any passengers!

And, uninsured cyclists who ride on the roads (with a rucksack containing their work clothes) thinking they have full priority on our roads?

Idiots on motorways who cause accidents.

Road policies (not only in Swindon) needs sorting!

During rush hour buses are generally full, meaning less cars on the road.
Many cyclists are insured, via membership of a cycling organisation or often via their household insurance.
They are not your roads, they are called the public highway open to all, pedestrians, horse riders, cyclists and licensed drivers.

Most motoring policies are fine, its the arrogant attitudes of drivers that are the problem that somehow they and they alone are above the law and drive and park and speed at whatever they think is appropriate. I remember more than a few saying it was ok to break the speed limit at night because there was no one around and that doing 35 in a 30 was acceptable on occasion if conditions allowed it. The only logical conclusion of their argument is to get rid of speed limits all together and let drivers decide what is safe and what isn't, wow that's a really good idea.

Laws are not pick and mix, you cant choose when and where you are going to obey them no matter how stupid you think they are, that is not your call to make. Anyone fined for speeding, parking or going through a bus lane deserves everything they get. I bet if a close relative of yours was hit by a driver in a bus lane you would want the full force of the law thrown at them, but you want to be able to drive in them when you see fit. Thats why there are still 3,000 deaths on our roads every year, 95% of which are driver error or could have been avoided if you hadn't been so selfish or stupid!

There were already plenty of signs/road markings stating bus only, they have added extra signs for the cameras.

You've completely lost it.

Liar, liar, pants on fire.

Seriously?
You're like the kid caught with cake all over his face who denies eating it. I ain't lying as you well know. How many log ins do you have now by the way?
The amusing thing is, you clearly admitted you rig the voting because you *think* I do.

So, you very much are lying - as you always do.

Just as you do about me having multiple logins. You seem to believe the other nutcase on here who appears to think I'm every other login bar his five logins.

This discussion ends here, because you've been warned about endlessly harping on about 'thumbs'. Don't you realise that precisely NOBODY is interested in your obsession?
The one who fiddles has the obsession with them. whats hilarious is that you know that I know what you do.I have not admitted anything as it would be a lie. Old ground this, you diverting your own actions onto me.
Channelx, ringer, sandor clegane, Tim newroman. All you!
These traits that you're constantly showing....paranoia and obsessiveness, probably means that you'll eventually end up in some sort of sanitorium before too long.
He is a councillor so he is there already!
Wait... Davey Gravey is a councillor?

That explains an awful lot!

Hopefully if this council are bothered about making things better for bus passengers, they will look at removing the pinch points outside morrisons at haydon wick as they are neither use nor ornament and also the speed bumps down pinehurst road...and introduce yellow lines on whitworth road so that those people with drives actually park on those instead of on the road and making it single file in some cases...somehow dont think this council will do that.

I'll never vote for Swindon Conservatives for as long as they tolerate the likes of Sandor Clegane = ChannelX = Ringer = pretty much anyone (himself under other logins) that agrees with his toxic comments.

Come on Adver. It's pretty obvious. Time to bar ChannelX latest login(s)

Guess you quoted me by mistake. I agree with you anyway. Having numerous accounts and up voting your own posts many times whilst down voting others many times is something only someone quite disturbed would do. Paronoid and obsessive it is. It is only the local newspapers website after all. Does it really matter if people agree with you or not?
He was talking about YOU!

Don't you have any idea what you come across like in these threads??
Only 5 more weeks and the children will be back at school. What a load of pathetic drivel grow up both of you ffs!

Official stat's say last year was 1713, for more details click the link.

Fully agree about the pinch points on Thames avenue by Morrisons. They contribute to congestion in the area and make passing through uncomfortable for everyone.
A more logical option in the area would be a roundabout situated to allow access & exit from Morrisions & The Sports Centre instead. This would slow traffic anyway but not impede the flow in the same manor.
Enforcing double yellows on Whitworth Rd is a bit harsh unless they create some parking where the ruined grass verges are to allow residents to park near their homes.

You have however convinced me to never vote conservative.
If every to55er politician persuaded you to never vote for that party ever again, you would run out of parties to vote for in a matter of minutes! They are all to55ers!

At my age I should be entitled to park where I need to surely by this stage I have provided more to the town in taxes than most of the chavs that plague the town.
Leave the oiks to the buses they dont have jobs anyway and leave the roads to us that have paid for them.

As with Tax, if the conception is bad there will be no consent.

The numbers of drivers ignoring the regulation in such a short time indicates there is no general consent.

There is a problem with bus lanes, which grows from the incapacity at present of our road system. This problem is a direct result of the genetically embedded desire to thwart the private car which exists, still, within the employed bureaucracy in Swindon Council (Highways).

This desire manifests itself in many ways - the blocking off of through routes, use of outdated technology (road humps) siting pedestrian islands adjacent to bus stops, the destruction of the key principle of fast distribution by the magic roundabout by installing pedestrian crossings right on the junctions- and bus lanes. In Swindon bus lanes generally conflict at some point with the general run of traffic, which means the bus has to wait for the goodwill of the motorist to let it in. Thereby defeating the argument, largely, that it speeds up transit.

Whenever measures are introduced like this, costing some £180,000 for initial installation there are additional costs of maintenance. Is there a contribution from Thamesdown Transport and others? What is going to be the additional back office costs of inevitable enforcement?

Unfortunately no credit is ever given to the motorist (97% of us) who tries to use common sense by reducing journey times, by utilising carriageway which remains idle, who does still attempt to get into town centre.

This money, wasted because of redundant thinking, could better have been spent on keeping some now closed service open; or even hiring-in some fresh thinking to break the deadlock of congestion which will defeat any hope of a vibrant town centre for visitors. Public transport and private conveyance needs to be harmonised - not set into further conflict.

And the sooner, on a macro front, this country changes from being run to fit the minority across the board to fulfill the consent of the majority, the better.
