A CALL has gone out for volunteers to help run the upcoming North Swindon Community Fun Day in September.

More than 30 organisations have come forward to help run the event which is the first of its kind in the area.

Everything is progressing on target ahead of the big day and now the organisers are looking for around 20 people to come forward to offer their services.

“We have been overwhelmed with how supportive the whole community has been over the last few months,” said Kate Harding, the secretary of the organising committee.

“Everyone has been fantastic and it shows with the number of groups which have come forward in such a short space of time.

“We have all roped in a few family members to help us out but we need about 20 people who can help make sure the day runs smoothly.

“They will be helping with things like car parking, stewarding and helping the committee to make sure the day runs smoothly.

“The main aim of the day is obviously to make sure everyone has fun, but we need to make sure it is safe and run properly.”

A host of local businesses and groups will be running stalls and demonstrations throughout the day alongside the police and fire service.

Funding from the council was confirmed last week to run the event, along with cash from Haydon Wick and Blunsdon Parish Councils as well as Purple Bricks Estate Agent.

The event is being held on September 6 at Brook Park, near Isambard School, and any money raised will go towards the event’s selected charity, the Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

This is the first time North Swindon has held an event on this scale, but it is hoped next year’s will be even bigger.

Kate said: “You can see by the number of organisations which have come forward there is definitely the demand for something like this.

“We had to have a cut-off point but there are still people coming forward wanting to be involved so we have put them on the list for next year.

“This is something of a learning curve for us all so we want feedback both during and after on what we can do to make things better. Everyone has been really positive so far so we are really looking forward to it.”
